Speaker or Emcee - It's Up To YOU!

Speaker or Emcee - It's Up To YOU!

What's the Difference?

By: Cathy Droz

Have you ever been asked to Emcee an event, be a keynote, or a guest speaker? I’m happy to do any of those, but being the Emcee is my favorite. I'll tell you why after I share the differences.

Keynote Speaker

  • The headliner, tasked with driving home the main idea or theme of the event.
  • Often chosen to spark interest and set the tone for the occasion.
  • Usually, a well-known expert or someone with significant name recognition due to their accomplishments.

Plenary Speaker

  • Typically comes from within the organization or a related industry.
  • Not always a professional speaker and might lack the polish of a keynote or guest speaker.
  • Focuses on delivering content relevant to the event’s specific industry or context.

Guest Speaker

  • Can be featured in breakout sessions or between keynote and plenary speakers.
  • Specializes in topics that are highly relevant to the audience.
  • Often an industry leader sharing research, technology, or insights that tie into the event’s theme.

Emcee

  • The Master of Ceremonies, responsible for hosting the event.
  • Kicks off the program, introduces themes and key players, and keeps things running smoothly.
  • Guides the audience through logistical details like locations, program changes, and lunch breaks.
  • Infuses the event with energy and personality while keeping it on track.
  • Makes sure both guests and speakers feel welcomed and engaged.

I've been a Keynote Speaker for LifeLock, a Plenary Speaker for the automotive industry, and a guest speaker for the police department, women’s entrepreneurial groups, fundraisers, and more. However, nothing compares to being an Emcee. I started my Emcee journey as a shy kid who couldn’t sell a box of Girl Scout cookies for fear of forgetting what a Thin Mint was. I would feel nauseous at the thought of reading in front of the class or trying out for the school play. I learned quickly that doing something out of your comfort zone was the cure. I’ve come a long way since those days.

There are men and women who are professional, well-paid speakers, and that’s all they do. But not all speakers can Emcee, and most Emcees aren’t professional speakers. I like to have fun with the audience while staying professional—and my New York accent doesn’t hurt. My favorite Emcee gigs are the SmartFem Summits Lea Haben Woodford puts on. She likes themes so I dress accordingly and stay in character for at least one day of the summit.

Whether you’re a seasoned speaker or just starting, there are professionals who can coach you and get you on stages. Ultimately, the difference between a speaker and an Emcee is up to you.

Enjoyed this article. I've performed in all capacities identified and I am impactful in each. However, I prefer Emcee roles over them all because, like you, I LOVE to have professional fun with the audience. I'm not a boring person so the events I am a part of are not boring either. Great read!!

Overcoming the fear of public speaking is no small feat, Cathy Droz. Your journey from shyness to emceeing is truly inspiring and a great example of personal growth.
