New Jersey took another step toward ending hunger in the state by providing free school lunches to an additional 60,000 students heading back to school this month.?Legislation sponsored by Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin, known as the Working Class Families Anti-Hunger Act, expanded eligibility for children to receive free, nutritious meals at school. It was signed into law earlier this year.

The new law is part of a series of legislation advanced under Speaker Coughlin’s leadership to combat food insecurity statewide.?

“The fight against hunger is the issue closest to my heart. We have changed the conversation in our state and made tremendous strides,”?said Speaker Coughlin (D-Middlesex). “During this Hunger Action Month, I want to thank the everyday heroes on the frontlines, spotlight some of our successes, and call for more of us to step up and help our neighbors in need. Together, we can end hunger in our state.”

Over the last seven years, Speaker Coughlin has worked with fellow legislators as well as a coalition of advocates and experts to collaboratively scale up statewide efforts and investment in fighting food insecurity.?

Those efforts include the creation of the New Jersey Office of the Food Security Advocate, the first such cabinet-level office in the nation, historic increases in aid to food banks and innovative solutions to addressing “food deserts” in communities across the state.?Details on efforts underway to combat hunger can be found?here.

This September, during Hunger Action Month, a new documentary series, “Feeding Hope,” will detail that progress and lay out a plan for a hunger-free future in New Jersey.?
