Speak From the Heart
Lisa Evans MBA
I coach leaders in high-impact public speaking, presentation skills, and business storytelling. My goal is to help you communicate with confidence and clarity.
You don’t need to be a good writer or a great orator to be a successful public speaker. You can be a great speaker if you remain authentic and speak from the heart.
What does that mean? It doesn't mean that you don't have to practice!
Share what is in your heart and touch another heart
It is simply saying what you want to say in the way that you want to say it. Speak from your heart to be heard and remembered and have an impact on the lives of others
Speaking from the heart is when we speak the truth in an authentic way without clichés or empty promises. Purely sharing what's in your hearts and touching another heart.
Speaking from the heart means exposing yourself. You may feel vulnerable and open - but it’s when you share what's deep within and make a connection in a genuinely authentic way of speaking that you have an impact on others.
I have listened to motivational speakers who bounce around on stage with an incredible amount of energy sharing stories that seem just too good to be true in a way that is perfectly polished. Are they believable? Do you come away with a sense of connection? I know I don't.
You may walk away feeling a little let down because you can’t really relate to what the speaker is saying. It can be the speaker who is less perfect and more like everybody else in the audience who has a far greater impact.
As an audience member you feel connected to the speaker not because they're saying all the right words with the right sentence structure and grammar - you connect with the speaker and ultimately the message they share because it speaks to you on an individual level. As audience members we think, this could be me! I can relate to that.
Believe in yourself
You can only speak from the heart if you believe in yourself. People who speak from the heart speak to people on an individual level they don't read from notes or talk to slides.
A speaker who speaks and heart is able to hold the attention of many people at once speaker can make all those people in the room feel as though you are talking to that individual, you can’t achieve that if you have a barrier such as notes, slides or a lectern.
So why don't more speakers speak from heart?
Well it's about breaking down barriers showing your vulnerability and feeling OK about letting go, some people are just not ready to do that.
Speaking from the heart takes courage and it takes commitment. When we speak from our hearts we speak from our core we speak the language of the audience we share our flaws our vulnerability.
There’s no short cuts to practice
Speaking from the heart doesn't mean you don't prepare; You have been preparing your whole life to share those stories that you have within but practice is still important regardless of your style.
As a public speaking coach I often hear people say "I'm not going to practice I'm just going to speak from heart". in some cases this can mean they are not prepared to put in the practice but hope for the best.
A truly great speech that is delivered from the heart takes a lot of practice to make it sound, look and feel genuine.
Look after yourself
Speaking from the heart doesn't mean getting carried away by your emotions to be able to speak from within you need to love and take care of yourself and know you're worth. The more you speak from your heart and more responsive your world will be around you as Gandhi says
If you have a message to share must be a message of love
When you speak from the heart you believe what you're saying and are passionate about sharing your message with others it's getting rid of your mask and sharing your true feelings to your audience. Your audience wants to know how you feel about your subject if you want to be convincing to others and must convey conviction.
Speak from your heart to be heard and remembered and have an impact on the lives of others
In the age of authenticity speaking from the heart is the key in being a successful public speaker

9 年Yes! Speaking from the heart = being authentic = being relaxed. I would take this one step further and say that if you speak from the heart you need to listen from the heart as well. So often our presentations become conversations or dialogs with the audience - we need to remember to listen without judgement and with our hearts,
