Public speaking isn’t just about delivering information, it’s about connection, imagination, and creating moments that resonate. The most unforgettable speeches are those where creativity takes center stage. So, how can we bring more creativity into our speaking? Let me share some of the techniques that have worked for me and might work for you, too.
1. Start with Emotion, End with Impact
When I take the stage, I often begin with the emotion I’m feeling in that moment. Exhausted? I’ll say, "Have you ever felt so drained that even coffee couldn’t save you?" Confused about my value? I’ll share a story of when I felt lost but found clarity. Starting with emotion draws people in, and I always end with an empowering or memorable takeaway.
2. Tell Stories People Won’t Forget
Personal stories are my secret weapon. I still remember painting on a white t-shirt during a speech about accepting true colors, it was messy, bold, and unforgettable. Three years later, people still mention it. When you speak, think about stories that left a mark on you—chances are, they’ll leave a mark on your audience, too.
3. Use Props to Paint the Picture
One time, I brought boxing gloves on stage to symbolize resilience. Another time, I used a blank canvas to talk about starting fresh. Props aren’t just visuals they’re tools that spark curiosity and make abstract ideas tangible.
4. Speak Their Language
Creativity isn’t about being complicated it’s about being relatable. I once spoke to a room full of banking CIOs, and instead of overwhelming them with jargon, I wove a story about problem-solving that mirrored their challenges. Find the metaphor or example that feels personal to your audience.

5. Play with Your Voice and Movement
Creativity isn’t just in your words, it’s in how you deliver them. I’ve walked into the audience when a microphone failed, spoken in a whisper to build suspense, and used bold gestures to command attention. Every movement and vocal change is part of the story you’re telling.
6. Embrace Questions as Creative Openings
During Q&A sessions, I try to understand the intent behind each question. Is it curiosity, or a desire to stand out? Either way, I use questions to spark new conversations, sometimes answering with another question to encourage reflection.
A Quick Challenge for You:
Think about your next speech or presentation. What’s one personal story, prop, or unexpected angle you could use to make your message stand out? Even the smallest creative touch can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Final Thought: Creativity isn’t about perfection it’s about boldness. It’s about daring to be different, to experiment, and to let your audience see your unique perspective. Your creativity is your power, use it to make your words unforgettable.
I’d love to hear from you! What’s the most creative thing you’ve ever done in a speech? Reply to this email or share it on LinkedIn. I can’t wait to be inspired by your stories.
