Spatial Finance Panel @ Columbia University

Spatial Finance Panel @ Columbia University

Thank you to the American Geographical Society and Columbia University for letting me take part in the Spatial Finance panel at Geography2050 with AllianceBernstein, SparkGeo, Climate Engine, and Sandhill Geographic.

?The 2-day event in NYC brought together thought leaders from across academia and business to understand better risk mitigation and how best to put geospatial innovations into action as we collectively shape the planet's future. This topic and agenda aligned well with my current focus at EarthDaily and my background at Moody’s and Maxar.

?At EarthDaily Analytics, we are revolutionizing risk management and providing actionable insights to Financial Service decision-makers powered by earth observation, change detection, and geospatial analytics capabilities. Based on my conversations at the event and on the panel, it became clear that by analyzing location-based data, banks can evaluate the potential economic development and stability of an area, helping them identify viable investment opportunities and assess potential risks related to the development of specific projects.

?In addition, by utilizing change detection, financial institutions can identify suspicious activities and potential anomalies, allowing banks and insurance companies to take measures to mitigate fraud risks.

?For example, a Private Equity firm going through the due diligence process with a potential portfolio company in the mining sector could use satellite data to monitor change detection and activity at each site. Many times, these locations are remote and very hard to monitor, especially during a months-long due diligence process.

?

A hedge fund could monitor supply chains daily to see what containers are stuck or have left port. This info could then be used to understand better and quantify the risk in their holdings by adding the satellite-based change detection data into their existing models.

?By the time the panel ended, it had become clear that Spatial Finance and satellite data is a big part of the future of the Financial Service decision-making process—an actual piece of proprietary data for every portfolio and a potential game-changing competitive advantage.

Curious Mike as to the awareness of and or investment levels necessary to move from #EO to #EM .. was that presented? How was it received ? Immediate takeaways and opportunities for engagement ?
