Sparkle, Boom, Suffocate: The Deadly Embrace of New Year's Eve Fireworks

Introduction

Fireworks are part and parcel of some events in the world, such as New Year's Eve celebrated in many regions of the world, Diwali observed in India, Bastille Day in France, Australia Day in Australia, Independence Day in the United States, and Guy Fawkes Night in the United Kingdom. New Year’s Eve is celebrated because it is the transition from one year to the next year around the world, on this night maximum fireworks are displayed.

Discussion

Firecrackers or fireworks displays are not environment-friendly; they have an impact on the environment, humans, and biodiversity. A variety of elements and chemical compounds are utilized in the production of firecrackers to create pyrotechnic effects. These include fuels such as charcoal and sulfur, oxidizers like potassium dichromate, barium chromate, and lead chromate, as well as flame suppressants such as potassium nitrate and sulfate. Additionally, colorants derived from salts of barium, strontium, calcium, sodium, and copper are used, along with binders like nitrocellulose and dextrin. Air quality, visibility and particulate matter concentration also increase in the local air. Particulate matter is?a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets in the air. The burning and bursting firecrackers emit PM 2.5, ozone, oxides of nitrogen, sulphur, carbon, ?water-soluble ions, heavy metals, organic compounds, and metallic elements which are used for colours. The emission of different kinds of chemicals negatively impacts ambient air quality for a short time.

Effects on Life

This anthropogenic activity is not good for even human health. Pollutants in clouds of smoke formed because of fireworks pose health concerns. Respiratory problems like bronchitis, respiratory infections, and asthma in susceptible individuals from exposure to such polluted air. It has negative impacts on animals, birds, water bodies, and soil. Around 3 million deaths were supposed to be caused by exposure to PM2.5 in 2007 according to a health study so PM is a health concern globally.

Conclusion

While the displays of fireworks on New Year's Eve are visually appealing but have a toll on the environment. The release of harmful pollutants, including particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and heavy metals, negatively affects air quality, human health, and the delicate balance of ecosystems. Regardless of the cultural significance of fireworks, environmental concerns related to them can't be overlooked. There is a need to explore alternatives such as laser light shows, drone displays, and light performances. It is essential to raise public awareness about the environmental and health consequences of fireworks. Local governments should make laws and regulations on fireworks displays and invest in research and development of cleaner and safer fireworks technologies for a sustainable world.
