I take vacations seriously. Really, I love my work and yet, recognize that I need time to refuel and recharge. It's why you often find me taking the journey to Florida to visit the “Happiest Place on Earth”, #DisneyWorld50. What was unusual for me on this trip was that for the first time in 20 years, I decided to visit Disney's most significant competitor in Florida, Universal Studios. I'd heard that the park is more "grown-up" and that I had to see it for myself.

Here is what I learned. I'm not a fan of amusement parks. However, I am a raving fan of #Disney. It wasn't the rides – it was the entire experience. Disney is different. What they value isn't just a box of popcorn and a thrill ride – it's a collective call to action and a reminder that creating a moment of magic for others – still matters. In essence, Disney is an experience organization. What type of "moments" are you making when it comes to leading others at work??

Daily, we have a choice in how we lead our people and teams. To create magic, I would suggest following these four pillars.?

The Four Pillars of Leadership Magic

  1. Welcomed?| How do you make those around you feel every single day? Strive to help them sense a feeling of inclusion and being accepted.
  2. Celebrated?| Beyond being welcomed, how do you celebrate their unique strengths and contribution? Work hard at seeing their #cliftonstrengths in action and letting them know you noticed.
  3. Included | Show everyone the same level of respect -?without reservation and fully supported along their career journey. Make time for positive intersections where everyone is invited.
  4. Connected |?Building strong relationships across a diverse group of talented people. Break down silos and facilitate relationships company-wide. Everyone communicates, but very few connect. Go to the next level of communication and genuinely get to know those you are serving alongside.

Creating magic isn't just a Disney thing. It is a leadership imperative that each of us owns the power to bring the Associate experience to life by creating moments of magic at work.

So how do you create magic moments for others at work?

Like many families, we experienced a magic moment we still tell people about 6 years later when they ask if we've ever been to Disney. And it had nothing to do with a ride or a character!
