Sparking Conversations for Safer Roads: A Vital Discussion Tool for Young Drivers

As leaders and contracting professionals, we spend our lives around legal documents. We understand them, we manage them, we negotiate them, we administer them, and we enforce them.

It was once a tradition at CCS to distribute the attached Driving Agreement each year around prom season. Every year roughly 4.1 million young adults in America turn 16 and become eligible to obtain a driver’s license. And we lose about 37,000 people to traffic fatalities each year. About 13,500 of those are alcohol related. Divide by 365 and that’s 37 EVERY SINGLE DAY just for the alcohol deaths! This is a national tragedy.

While we are not so naive to believe that everyone will sign a contract like this, we offer it as a basis for discussion with young drivers. Here is the primary discussion point: we all make bad choices sometimes. In the process, we sometimes trap ourselves within our bad choices and bad decisions, believing there is no way out of the box we have constructed around ourselves.

Thus in driving as in life – REGARDLESS OF YOUR TRACK RECORD, NOTHING IS STOPPING YOU FROM MAKING GOOD DECISIONS STARTING RIGHT NOW!?

Sit down with a young adult that you know. This might cover anyone from age 15 to 21. A nephew, a neighbor’s kid, a godchild, the paperboy or girl, or friends of your children. Spread the word. Think about the situations that young drivers encounter. Yes, it is a bad decision to drink and drive. Yes, it is a bad decision to get in a car with an impaired driver. There are many bad decisions we can make (and do make!) in driving and in life.?

Whether or not the agreement is physically signed, it can provide a great kick-off point for a very sobering (pun intended) discussion on safe driving and substance abuse. It provides a list of possible predicaments and mutually desirable outcomes. Consider using this as a way to start a very important conversation.?

Help them take this opportunity to stop and think about their choices. It is never too late to start making good choices. Certainly, the consequences of past bad choices might live with us, but starting today, there is no reason to continue making bad choices. Impress this on our youth. Give them the opportunity to get out of dangerous situations; give them alternative choices. Encourage them to make good decisions and not fear even worse retribution from you! It’s hard to be a parent and deal with a child’s immaturity and bad choices. It is your job, however, to guide them, train them up, and model good decision making.?

We offer this simple tool for your use. We hope you take the opportunity to save a life today. We would be pleased to hear from you about how you made use of this agreement. CCS specializes in all types of contracts and leadership development. If we can be of service to you in any way, please contact us.
