Spark Renewables Announces Proposed Mallee Wind Farm

Spark Renewables has announced its latest development, the Mallee Wind Farm, a proposed wind and battery project located approximately 16 kilometres north-east of Buronga, in the South-West Renewable Energy Zone of New South Wales (SW REZ).??

The project has a proposed generation capacity of up to 1GW. It has the potential to power over 450,000 Australian homes and will offset up to two million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. It would connect to the National Electricity Market via transmission infrastructure upgraded as part of Project EnergyConnect.???

The proposed site for the Mallee Wind Farm has been chosen as it has a number of highly favourable factors, including a strong wind resource, good location within the SW REZ and a very low density of housing within 10 kilometres.??

We believe that the SW REZ offers an excellent opportunity to accelerate the buildout of renewables in NSW due to its many favourable characteristics, including a strong solar and wind resource. It is expected to offer one of the lowest build costs per megawatt (MW) in NSW,?which is vital to the provision of abundant, reliable and affordable renewable energy for the people of NSW.??

With our two large batteries on either side of the SW REZ (Mallee Wind Farm and Dinawan Energy Hub), we are well positioned to provide additional network services within the REZ.

The proposed Mallee Wind Farm is in the early stages of development and will undergo a rigorous planning and assessment process prior to being approved. As part of this process, we will undertake extensive community consultation and we strongly encourage all stakeholders and community members to get involved. Our first community consultation will take place on 23 August, with details available at www.malleewindfarm.com.??

At Spark Renewables, we are committed to working with and supporting the local communities we become a part of. Together with our other previously announced SW REZ project, the Dinawan Energy Hub, the proposed Mallee Wind Farm is expected to bring significant benefits to the community and the surrounding region in the form of jobs and investment, as well as funding for local community initiatives through a community fund that would be established for the life of the project.??

Additionally, on all projects we develop, we prioritise the local procurement of goods and services and are committed to engaging closely with First Nations community members and businesses throughout the project consultation, construction and operation phases.??

The Mallee Wind Farm is the latest development to progress to the consultation phase in Spark Renewables’ growing portfolio of renewable energy assets.

Our operational portfolio includes the 100MW Bomen Solar Farm near Wagga Wagga, which commenced operations in 2020 and is contracted to Westpac and Flow Power , alongside a diversified portfolio of wind, solar and storage developments assets in excess of 5GW.?

Spark Renewables is wholly owned by the Spark Infrastructure Group, an owner of critical energy assets, including generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure across Australia.??
