Spark of Genius: Why Electric Vehicles are the Future of New York State

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular across the world, and New York State is no exception. With a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the state has implemented various programs and initiatives to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles. ?In this blog post, we will explore the various incentives and programs that are available to encourage the use of electric vehicles in New York State.

Having just come off the heels of the 2023 New York International Auto Show, electric vehicles took center stage. Traditionally a showcase for the latest and greatest in gasoline-powered cars and trucks in recent years, EVs have been embraced at the event. Overall, the increasing presence of EVs at the New York Auto Show reflects the growing recognition among automakers and consumers that EVs are an important part of the future of transportation. As EV technology continues to improve and charging infrastructure continues to expand, it is likely that we will see even more EVs showcased at future auto shows, as well as a growing number of EVs on the roads of New York and beyond.

One of the most exciting developments in electric vehicles is our EVolve NY program, which aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure across the state. The EVolve NY program is a key part of New York State's efforts to promote electric vehicles. The program aims to install 800 new fast charging stations across the state by 2025. This will make it easier for drivers to charge their electric vehicles and help reduce range anxiety, one of the main concerns of electric vehicle drivers. In addition to expanding charging infrastructure, the program also offers rebates for the purchase of electric vehicles, making them more affordable for New York residents.

Another important aspect of the EVolve NY program is education and outreach. NYPA is working to increase awareness of the benefits of EVs, including their environmental and economic benefits. The program is also working to address common misconceptions and concerns about EVs, such as range anxiety and the availability of charging infrastructure.

Overall, the NYPA's EVolve NY program is playing a critical role in promoting the adoption of electric vehicles in New York State. Through its investments in charging infrastructure, incentives, and education, the program is helping to accelerate the transition to a clean and sustainable transportation system.

One of the most significant incentives for purchasing an electric vehicle in New York State is the Drive Clean Rebate program. The rebate, part of the Charge NY initiative, offers electric car buyers the Drive Clean Rebate of up to $2,000 for new car purchases or leases. In addition to the Drive Clean Rebate, there are also federal tax incentives available for the purchase of electric vehicles. The federal government offers a tax credit of up to $7,500 for the purchase of a new EV (select models).

Despite these incentives, electric vehicles still represent a relatively small percentage of the overall vehicle market. According to CleanTechnica , a news aggregator focused on clean technology, approximately 5.7% of US car sales in 2022 were for fully-electric vehicles, a 65% increase compared to 2021. Though EV sales continue to grow, this underscores the need for continued investment and support for electric vehicles in the state.

In addition to promoting electric vehicles, New York State is also investing in renewable energy sources to power these vehicles. The state has set a goal of generating 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. This includes wind, solar, and hydropower. By using renewable energy to power electric vehicles, New York State can further reduce its carbon emissions and help create a more sustainable future.

As the world becomes increasingly aware of the impact of fossil fuels on the environment, many states are taking steps towards a more sustainable future. In New York State, one such step is the electrification of government agency vehicle fleets. Programs like these aim to reduce the state's carbon footprint and improve air quality by transitioning from traditional gasoline-powered vehicles to electric-powered ones. By doing so, the state hopes to set an example for other agencies and citizens alike to follow in their footsteps for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

New York City, for example, is taking significant steps to promote the use of electric vehicles, particularly in its government fleet. In a December 2021 press release , the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) announced that it would be placing an order for 184 all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E Sport Crossover Utility Vehicles for law enforcement and emergency response use. In January of this year, Mayor Eric Adams announced $10.1 million in federal funding to replace more than 900 fossil-fuel power fleet vehicles and install more than 300 EV chargers in the city. The $10.1 million in funding will help procure 382 Chevrolet Bolts, 360 Ford E-Transit vans, and 150 Ford F-150 E-Lightning pick-up trucks.

In the EVolve NY initiative’s second phase, NYPA will work with partners to increase EVs among public transportation fleets, as well as develop additional public fast charging locations where needed. This includes converting the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s entire bus system to a zero-emissions fleet. This would not only reduce emissions but also provide cost savings for transit systems over the long term.

NYPA itself is no stranger to fleet electrification. With 76 plug-in vehicles, including 16 all-electric models like the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq5, Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, and the Chevrolet Bolt, we’re always exploring ways to make our fleet even greener. Additional vehicles on order include the Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet Silverado EV for our crews in the field – and what may be the coolest vehicle yet – an Altec EV bucket truck will be joining the NYPA fleet soon.

In conclusion, the advancements in electric vehicles in New York State are exciting and promising. The EVolve NY program is a key part of the state's efforts to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and reduce carbon emissions. With the expansion of charging infrastructure, rebates for the purchase of electric vehicles, and the growth of the electric vehicle market, New York State is well-positioned to lead the transition to a more sustainable transportation system.

The benefits of electric vehicles are clear. They are environmentally friendly, with zero emissions, and offer significant savings on fuel costs. However, there are still barriers to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, including concerns about range, the availability of charging infrastructure, and the initial cost of purchasing an EV. The various incentives and programs available in New York State are designed to address these barriers and make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable for consumers.

Pity that no one understands physics. Imagine the long lines to charge up your car with 85 pounds of coal or 3 barrels of oil it will take to generate a full charge. And wait until the state decides to tax you by the mile for your heavier battery powered car that is putting more wear and tear on the highway than the lighter gas powered car. Oh it’s the future commerade.
