The Spark: Conditional Happiness 01/08/2023

If you are an active Excel user, you are probably aware of the IF function, where a condition leads to the generation of a desired result.

Over the years, I've noticed that this concept also applies to how we perceive both the future and the past, influencing our present state.

The FUTURE state that impacts the PRESENT:

  • IF I buy this garment, then I'll look prettier.
  • IF I get this job, then I'll be fulfilled.
  • IF I learn new skills, then I'll deserve a promotion.
  • IF I live in the US, then my life will be better.

The PAST state that impacts the PRESENT:

  • IF only I had said this to her, then things would be different now.
  • IF only I had saved more money, then I wouldn't need to go through this now.

But, unlike Excel, we do not need a conditional formula to be happy.

Studies have shown that people who rely on conditional happiness tend to experience a "hedonic treadmill" effect. This means that once they achieve their desired goals or conditions, their happiness quickly returns to its baseline level, and they start seeking the next condition for happiness.?

Hedonic Treadmill Effect

The idea that whatever was supposed to happen, or would have happened, will ALWAYS ruin the present moment.

Life is not a spreadsheet formula, and happiness doesn't come with conditions. Even if the condition is met, there is no guarantee of achieving happiness. This approach leads to postponing life's joys and ruins the present moment.

Be present, be now.
