A Spare Moment of Dignity

It's a variant of a familiar travesty.

Like the bullied student being asked, "What did you do to provoke him?" or a pedestrian hit by a drunk driver, "Didn't you see the car coming?" or a raped woman told, "You shouldn't have dressed like that!" And now Jen Psaki, a woman who for years has been a critical player in the cabal whipping up unprecedented hatred, fear, and resentment towards Donald Trump, in an interview effectively telling him, "You better change, or it may happen again!"

Indeed, I admit that political debates easily fire me up. I love that feeling of adrenaline when the other side loses, you find a superior argument in a debate, or your opponent somehow makes a fool of himself. Thus, I am certainly guilty of transgressions through the years, but I can't recall ever using moments of crisis to opportunistically attack or celebrate when an opponent has been physically harmed. That's one of those lines in the sand for me, so if you ever find evidence of me crossing it, let me know, and I will sincerely apologize.

Encouragingly, the attempt on Trump's life last Saturday has so far brought a halt to most Trump-hating rhetoric. Even Joe Biden called him "Donald" rather than, as normal, the greatest threat to democracy since Hitler. However, I can't shake the feeling that this moment in time is only like one of those half-seconds of silence when one part of a quarreling couple shuts up, hoping the other will calm down but that doesn't happen...

In other words, I don't think the left will be able to control itself. And nor will some elements on the right. But the difference is that while conspiracy nuts and others on the right are fringe groups, the far left is today ruling not only the White House but the media, academia, the entertainment industry, and most other political "commanding heights." Thus, my guess is that, within a couple of weeks, everything will go back and sound as it has during the last six years.

I hope I am wrong about this. But I doubt it. As Trump, after what happened last Saturday, will certainly move ahead - probably far ahead - in the polls, decades of self-imposed brainwashing about everything and anyone right-of-left is fascist and evil, and "A Threat Toward Democracy" will get the bulk of the Democratic Party and its stormtroopers to start to behave apeshit crazy again - and everything else also going back to normal...
