Finally, continuing with the theme of storage, as a market leader in the #temporarybuilding sector our blog looks at the alternative options out there if a temporary warehouse building is off the table completely, either because you don’t think it is right for your business or is simply unaffordable. Let’s get started!?

?? Case Study: O-I Glass ??

O-I Glass had spent far too long storing their pallets and inventory outside in the rain, snow and wind or at off-site storage facilities that it was becoming unsustainable and far too costly. Down the years, this had cost the business a significant amount of money in unwanted transportation costs and replacements. When they contacted us, we worked with them to deliver an innovative solution that would maximise all available on-site storage space at their Alloa site in Scotland.?

How you ask? ?? Owing to the adaptability of our semi-permanent buildings, in the planning and installation of the structure, Spaciotempo were able to create a truly bespoke workaround to immovable groundworks on site. The stepped frame that was fitted around the obstacles increased the warehouse size and maximised space for the glass bottle makers – something that would prove much difficult for a traditional building.

In addition, not many companies in the temporary and semi-permanent building sector can offer the 8m eave height that Spaciotempo installed on this project. This enabled O-I Glass Ltd to utilise the full interior span of the building by storing at an increased height right up to the apex. The Neivalu structure was also fitted with two roller shutter doors for forklift access into the warehouse, ensuring loading and unloading tasks are now completely streamlined, and an enhanced electrical heating system to keep the facility warm through the cold months.

?? Blog: Top 5 Solutions to Increase Storage Space ??

"Are you unsure if a temporary warehouse building is right for your business needs at all, or maybe you don’t have the budget? We’ve got you covered. Let’s take a deep dive into other ways you could manage your lack of available storage space or protect inventory, including the pros and cons of each.

Option #1: Traditional building

Traditional construction buildings, otherwise known as brick-and-mortar buildings, are extremely reliable, durable and can last forever as long as they are properly maintained. These buildings can survive in extremely harsh environments as they are built into and not on concrete foundations, and make a good long term storage solution, anywhere.

You may find you end up with lots of wasted space though, because permanent warehouses don’t offer the modularity of a temporary building either, so our advice is to always rule that option out first rather than the other way around.

Option #2: Cover the goods with something else

If budgetary constraints prevent you from investing in any covered warehouse storage space at all, or the requirement is to only store for weeks as opposed to months and years, then there are much cheaper alternatives. Examples include Tarpaulin, a large sheet of strong, flexible material; or a portable, easy to erect shelter such as a canopy or marquee.

These are by no means a long-term fix but are worth considering if other options are not attainable, if only to provide limited protection from the elements.

Option #3: Store off-site

Off-site storage, warehouse space to rent, or even a container can be an attractive option when space on-site is at a premium. Permanent off-site storage is not always the most cost-effective option but is often built in a prime location with excellent, UK wide transport links, is typically well maintained by the contractor, and has more than enough floor space to meet your storage requirements.

Off-site storage facilities often have ready-made warehouse management systems in place, such as pallet racking or mezzanine floors. Narrow aisles are also a common feature you may find in off-site locations and are a great way to increase available floor space."
