AI has many faces and required to be investigated by many perspectives, as it happens with any health technology. ?? Starting from the ethical perspective, WHO has recently released a key document as Ethics and governance of artificial intelligence for health: guidance on large multi-modal models. Hence, overarching concerns of society now have to do with ethical considerations necessary to bring about responsible innovation by ensuring fairness, respect of users' consents and protection of personal information of individuals. Knowledge, skills and expertise in this specialized ethicist profession such as being offered by University of Edinburgh in conjunction with COUSERA then become highly prized and sort after. As we recognise the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (21st March), we take pause to consider the influential power of social networks and rapid advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) which are creating new emergencies in the fight against racial discrimination. Every effort must be made to prevent algorithmic models and new technologies from reinforcing stereotypes, amplifying hate speech and exacerbating discrimination. The Recommendation on the Ethics of AI (https://lnkd.in/gr3GCiCF), adopted unanimously by UNESCO Member States in November 2021, and the publication, in November 2023, of Guidelines for the Governance of Digital Platforms (https://lnkd.in/g76rkdKF), are all pioneering initiatives by UNESCO to ensure that technological progress does not come at the expense of fundamental human rights.

This dependence on sensitive information necessitates stringent data protection measures. ? ???Synthetic data?– a simulated dataset created to mimic the statistical properties of real-world data – presents a promising solution. At the same time, the application of synthetic data in research raises critical questions about the extent to which GDPR applies. ? ???It is therefore essential for researchers to adopt?responsible practices?in generating and utilizing synthetic data. This includes employing rigorous de-identification techniques for training datasets, adhering to existing data protection regulations, fostering transparency in applied methodologies, and carefully assessing research outcomes. ? ???In the LUCIA project, our researchers have developed a synthetic dataset with meticulous attention to these practices.
