Space to Village: Turn No Into Yes

Space to Village: Turn No Into Yes

It’s been quite the week for space, from the dazzling solar eclipse many of us experienced Monday to the galactic celebration of Yuri’s Night and the International Day of Human Spaceflight!?

Check out Sian “Leo” Proctor, Ph.D. post!

When I think about spaceflight and what that means for us terrestrial beings, I think about the words Yes and No.

When we reflect on the audacity of human curiosity and exploration, our minds hear “yes.”

Yes to a world of unknown possibility.

Yes to going further than we’ve gone before.

Yes to a life without limits.

What’s one way we can chip away at that big, hairy, audacious goal with one small “yes”?

But if we think harder, we know that the road to that yes was paved with a lot of no’s.

In a shocking revelation that will astound and surprise everyone (read: no one), I’m not very good at hearing and responding to the word “no.” In fact, it’s almost as if I don’t hear it.?

When I hear “no,” I always presume that’s the beginning of the negotiation, not the final decision. Ask my partner.?

The point here is: when you’re faced with “no,” ask yourself: is the answer really no or is it “no, not that way” or “no not now”?

Whether it's spaceflight engineers who run into an unsurmountable problem (hello: Apollo 13 anyone?) or communications leaders who run into a roadblock, we can’t just give up when we can't execute the way we planned.

So my reflection for you this week is: what’s another way to meet the goal??

What’s another way to meet the goal?

Is there another way to deliver our news than a generic press release?

Is there something more surgical than a Facebook post that reaches the right audience?

Who can we enlist to support our efforts to go further or do more with finite resources??

For many enterprises, AMJ is Q4, so we are busy executing our current year vision and planning the next fiscal year. It’s easy to say that “not enough money” is the obstacle preventing us from achieving our desired success; I’ve worked for nonprofits and government entities, and this almost always feels like the case.

Sometimes, it’s about identifying all our available resources.?So I'll ask you again:

What’s one way we can chip away at that big, hairy, audacious goal with one small “yes”?

I’d love to hear your thoughts about that in the comments below.?
