Space to Village: Selfie Edition
What comes to mind when I say "selfie?" Is it performative? Is it showing the version of yourself you want the world to see? What if we took the word "selfie" and made it about being gentle with one's self? And what if a "selfie" meant more than a picture of you-- but could also mean a snapshot of how you show up for yourself and others?
The Governor and The General
It Takes a Village. Growing up in a literal village of 1,700 people, perhaps this phrase resonates differently with me. I remember a barber referring to me and my brother Paul Worley as "The Governor and the General," lovingly teasing me for my early interest in politics and my brother's affinity for the Army from a young age.
Every time I visited my small-town library, the librarians had a book on hold for me: sometimes it was social studies, sometimes anatomy. They were just as interested in what I was reading as I was.
When the opportunity arises to give back to my little hometown or the concentric villages that have continued to nurture and sustain me, I have to say yes.
So when Kent State University student Genevieve Krejci reached out about interviewing me about my career and the Mandy Jenkins Scholarship, that was a quick yes.
“I hope that the scholarship helps ensure that the people who are leaders in our newsrooms come from the real fabric of Ohio and from the U.S. — because they have different points of view and different life experiences, which brings something fresh and new to news coverage,” said Worley.

Power to Pursue
And that's also why I was a "fast yes" when Barbara Hauser and Rachel Desrochers asked if I would be available for a panel at this year's Power to Pursue Spring Summit.
Our conversation, led by Honour Hook , is about "ascending." Here's a snippet of my POV on this:
To Lauren, ascending in one’s career may not always look like a forward movement. She calls this the “Mary Poppins approach to career planning.” The fictitious nanny was 100% present at all times, ‘but once the job was done, she had no qualms about moving on to the next task, or family, or town,” says Lauren.
If you're at the summit this week, please say hi! The best part of these events is meeting loads of new, interesting, and ambitious people who inspire you!
Take a Selfie Moment For Yourself
What will be your "selfie" moment this week? How will you invest in your health, career or other ambitions? Who can help you prioritize what you need to do to survive and what you need to do to thrive?
We're back after a bye last week. Thanks to our new subscribers and our existing subscribers for sticking with us.
