The 'space-time continuum' - not as you know it!

As I fly home after 2 busy days facilitating, I'm reflecting on what 'space' and 'time' can create for us humans, as individuals and a team in a workplace.

In a previous work life, I've been in the 'hot' seat in internal HR trying to getting the buy into an idea, securing budget for training programmes or facilitation, access to people for workshops (the logistics can be hell) and making sure that the key 'deliverables' required by the business are going to be covered. So I firmly understand the challenge, albeit from a transactional lens.

It is so worth it, but not necessarily for the measures or outcomes you are expecting.

The thing is, often the biggest gift for a team is spending time face to face (real life) and together. The gift isn't that they're 'not working' or they're 'out of the office'.

The gift is that they're connecting, sharing, listening, and being future focused.

So now at hr butter , whilst my role might be crafting amazing sessions, creating a safe space to share and connect, and asking thought provoking questions and at times damn challenging ones.

The magic, the alchemy, is what happens in that space and time together.

  • The space created by time together.
  • The space created by a day without distractions.
  • The space created by not 'doing' or 'being' in control.
  • The space created by being vulnerable, by sharing, by trusting.
  • The space created by better understanding others and in real life (not on the end of a phone, text, or inside your laptop screen on a video call).
  • The space filled with connecting, being courageous, leaning in and sharing.
  • The space filled by being inspired and inspiring others (sometimes in just sharing your story or trying something new).
  • The space created by listening intently and intentionally.

For me, the sheer awesomeness of my job is in knowing that I've made a positive difference in individual lives and team cohesiveness - by helping create this time and space; but the magic is in all the ingredients coming together as humans.

I totally agree Kate Bacchus, CMHRNZ we can not underestimate the value of connectivity in teams - it leds to other ‘C’ words like clarity, courage and curiosity- all required to have teams humming!
