Space is Now

In the collective mind, “space” feels pretty futuristic. It is not just a feeling either; our cultural dialogue consistently positions space in the future. Smithsonian Magazine organizes space content under a section called “Future of Space Exploration.” NASA’s Kids’ Club emphasizes exploration as looking forward to learning things we do not know yet and to seeing places we have not visited yet. Brad Pitt is living in the future in Ad Astra. So is Matt Damon in The Martian. ?Even Ol’ Blue Eyes sings about the future in “Fly Me to the Moon,” and in 1954, that made a lot of sense: the moon was a wish then, not a fact.
And, space is the future. Private funding in space fully doubles government funding, and revenues from commercial space activity alone have increased 162% since 2005. Yet, even as private investment signals optimism in things to come, our daily lives—right now—are deeply connected with the technologies and infrastructure of space.
If you are reading this on your phone, you are interacting with space technology.
Ditto if you woke up on a memory foam mattress.
Space spinoffs have been integrated into our lives so seamlessly that they are paradigm-shifting even as we forget that we have the space ecosystem to thank. Focusing on spinoffs, though, misses the nature of this moment in space history; spinoffs are developments ordered to space exploration. They only secondarily benefit consumers here on Earth.

This moment is different. The average consumer shapes the course of the industry, the very purpose and presuppositions of space. The world’s most innovative minds are now reconceiving space in terms of an off-Earth global ecosystem. It is collective, ambitious, and requires a diverse range of skillsets and backgrounds to achieve our collective wish for the future.
You do not have to be Brad Pitt or Matt Damon in a spacesuit to contribute to its future advances. No longer is space a playground for the rich or a career-maker for bureaucrats. Space is your heritage, and the space ecosystem is waiting for you. Come see how you can play your part.
Space is for you. Space is for all.
Beam me up Scotty.
