Lately I've been thinking about the spacing effect.

And when I say "thinking about", I mean getting thoroughly confused.

Over the years I'm sure we've all encountered phrases such as?distributed learning,?spaced repetition,?retrieval practice?and variations thereof; but it has become apparent to me that many of us conflate these terms.

So I've spent a typically disproportionate amount of time trying to untangle the meanings of these phrases, and it is these semantics I wish to share with you now.

Thanks for sharing Ryan. Took me a bit to get the different concepts straight as well - your definitions were really helpful. I certainly struggle to build this ‘space’ into compliance learning…still a WIP! Thanks again.

Nice write up. One more concept into the mix that is often entangled with spaced retrieval: interleaving. You call activities “distractors” in between spaced sessions. Interleaving is mixing together different topics and so, naturally it creates spacing between the same topic. Those distractors become just a different topic. One important thing to remember that learner will most likely feel they’re not progressing, they might feel frustrated. In fact what they lose is the “illusion” of knowing and progressing. But you must have a good change mamagement in place with adults otherwise it can backfire.

I really enjoyed reading this article. Covers many important levers to improve the efficacy of learning initiatives.
