Space closure of a recently extracted tooth 37
This case presents space closure of a recently extracted (less than a year) tooth 37. The treating doctor is Dr. Anna Martirosyan, one of the lead orthodontics in our team. The patient was 34 years old at the beginning of treatment.
Space was closed with dental anchorage and several months of Class II elastics. A .019” x .025” SS wire was used in combination with medium Ni-Ti springs. Total space closure took 13 months, closing about 10mm of space. The speed of space closure comes out to roughly 0.7mm per month. 2 year post-debond – retainer around 36/38 with bent ends.
Don’t rush to extract healthy third molars (8s) instead of bad 6s and 7s if you plan on orthodontic treatment. Remember, we always have two options – place an implant or to close space with our own, natural teeth. This second options is only for the most patient of doctors and patients ??.
