When you are traveling in flight, you might notice several people working together to prepare for the journey. There are different teams like cockpit and cabin crews, airline operations center, maintenance and ground crew, flight deck crew, pushback crew, and air traffic control working together starting from planning for the trip, fueling, food, and beverages, boarding the passengers, and take off. Many people come together and support us to have a safe and comfortable travel experience. However, in this entire episode, who is the single point accountable for that flight? It is indeed the pilot of the plane. The pilot of the aircraft holds complete accountability for ensuring that the aircraft is ready for the trip. She cannot have excuses in midair that the flight was not fueled adequately by the team which is responsible for doing so. She can neither blame the landing gear not working correctly.
This is a concept I learned from Mike Ball, when he was CEO of Hospira and the entire organization picked up the "Single Point of Accountability", abbreviated as SPA.
For every deliverable, we used to ask, 'Who is the SPA?', such a powerful tool to forge accountability in an organization.
‘Single Point of Accountability - SPA’ is the ‘Power of One’, is also a Gladiator Tool in my latest book, "Corporate Gladiator’s Handbook of Project Management" Check out the following link, for more such tools.

1 年Agreed Sir... Very nicely explained with example. SPA model certainly effective in pharmaceutical industries as dedicated work force is deployed and most of the operations are driven through SOP.

1 年John Robert ... SPA model can be effective in providing clarity, streamlining decision-making, and fostering a sense of ownership. However to make SPA successful, organizations need to strike a balance and ensure that the designated individual has the necessary support, resources, and authority to carry out their responsibilities effectively. Additionally, the organization should promote a collaborative culture that encourages collective responsibility and involvement from all team members to avoid potential pitfalls ... which I am sure is also a ?????????????????? ????????

1 年No agree with SPA terminology in honest way. As per SOP it seems good to share. If everyone is doing well than how SPA can be accountable. Team work can't be single in practical situation.
