So.....you want to be published? Some thoughts and strategies for the novice writer.

Before the pandemic, at least twice a month, I would hear from a teacher or former student who wants to know the "magic words" to get their new children's book, educational game, or curriculum out into the public eye. Now, it is once a week. Folks were home and used their time to pull together a manuscript or to pitch an idea. How can I make money? How can I become a serious contender? There are no easy answers and few will get to a place where teaching can be left behind and make a living from one's published words. Still, I have developed a simple strategy that I call "The Three P's".

  1. PRESENT?as much as possible. Get on the agenda for local conferences and workshops. Expect no payment. You are only after exposure. If you are asked to present, say "Yes". The more you are out there, the more folks believe you are more than a teacher. You become known as an author or creator.
  2. PUBLISH?as much as possible. Write for teachers’ blogs, journals, magazines. Share personal experiences. School newsletters? Do it. Start a blog? Immediately.?Again, don't expect payment. Pursue publishing in every available format and for varied audiences. One little accessed venue is reviewing textbooks or materials for publishers. This work hones your analytical thinking skills.
  3. PUBLICIZE?as much as you can, using Social Media. Linked In. Facebook. Twitter. Get your brand out. But make sure it is cogent, creative, and crafted to match your message. Be sure to create a separate page or account for your professional work. Try not to mix messages with writing projects competing for space and interest with vacation pictures and coffee shop updates.

Finally, network with?PARENTS. Happy parents influence other parents seeking help for their children.?Post to parent group pages. Speak to PTA and other organizations. Remember, you will be working for FREE for several years and that is part of the journey. Lean into it.

There are no easy fixes. Getting published or selected or embedded into a curriculum takes time and commitment, and of course, a great material.?Try the?"Three P's".?
