Sowing Resilience in Rwanda

Sowing Resilience in Rwanda

Earlier in August, the International Seed Federation and Fair Planet , together with Rwandan government and private sector representatives, sowed the first seeds of the Rwanda Seed Resilience project in?the Horticulture Center of Excellence?(HCoE) in Kigali.

Last week, partners celebrated the first transplanting day, which is when we take our carefully nurtured seedlings and give them a new home in the rich Rwandan soil. It's a momentous occasion as these tiny plants hold the promise of a great harvest come November.

About the Project

An estimated 84,000 farmers in Rwanda will get training and access to high quality seeds as part of this five-year project to boost food, nutrition, and economic security.?Farmers will participate in training sessions on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP),?enabling them to produce and sell significantly higher yields with better produce quality.

"We had inspiring meetings with the government officials and other actors from the public and private sectors in Rwanda. It gives me confidence to know that we are aligned in our vision?to increase the access of smallholder farmers to?improved varieties," said Michael Keller, ISF Secretary General.

The project will address three food and nutrition pillars: fresh vegetables for vitamins and fibers, pulses for proteins and soil fertility improvement, and cereals and potatoes for carbohydrates.
