Southwest Airlines is getting rid of open seating

Southwest Airlines is shifting to assigned seats for the first time in its history, a change that will allow the low-fare carrier to charge a premium for some of the seats on its planes.
The airline will also start offering overnight “red-eye” flights for the first time, which it said will improve the efficiency by increasing the use of its aircraft.
Southwest said customers were clamoring for these changes – when people switch to a competitor from Southwest, the company said the No. 1 reason the unhappy passengers cite is open seating. But the change will also help the company charge some passengers more for their tickets.

4 个月In many ways I had no problem with the SW system other than it seemed that by the time all the pre-boards were allowed on the plane was half full. I think the old system made SWA unique. I liked it over all. There were other larger issues that caused me(and others I know) to jump ship.

4 个月Getting rid of open seating is an excellent idea. With open seating, people are standing for a long time. The new system would have people board by zone based on their row number, except for first class which boards first provided that Southwest remodels their planes for first class seating.
