Southold resident, neighbor, -&- good friend VERNA PETTY yet again gave me inspiration for a story. Verna's dad was a blacksmith. VERNA let me know of the Southold HAWKINS' STORE where MILDRED HAWKINS was usually seen in the front of the building from a "little window playing solitaire" ~ YES - {!} ~ Playing cards by herself.

THANKSALATEA VERNA PETTY. Here goes "my-take" on MILDRED HAWKINS.

“Miss Mildred Hawkins enjoyed a visit to the Mineola Fair last week.” {From a BREVITIES column that appeared in The Long island Traveler dated September 28, 1933.}

“The Christmas Bazaar and Card Party at the St. Patrick’s Church Tuesday afternoon, was a grand success. Eighteen tables were filled for play. Miss Mildred Hawkins won the Door prize. Gagen, Editor that was in The Long Island Traveler dated December 16, 1937.}

Now folks … This makes sense ~ as acknowledgement is just the write thing to do. ~ Mildred Hawkins had a Card of Thanks in The Long Island Traveler dated February 15, 1940:

“CARD OF THANKS

I wish through the Traveler to thank all those who sent me cards while I was in the Hospital. They certainly helped to pass away many a long hour.

Mildred Hawkins.”

“Photographs of the Southold Town Tercentenary Celebration by both amateur and professional photographers {were} on exhibition this week through Saturday at the Herbert Hawkins store on Beckwith avenue, Southold. A group of women assisted the photographers in arranging the show, which {was}open to the public without charge.” {This was entered in The County Review that was dated August 01 {stet}, 1940.}

“Miss Ida Haweell {stet} entertained Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hawkins and Miss Mildred Hawkins at bridge on Tuesday of this week.” {From the June 11, 1942 SOUTHOLD column that was in The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman.}

The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman dated November 29, 1945 shared a column announcing a forthcoming White Christmas Party To Be Held December 3 {1945} in the Grange Hall via the Southold Sunshine Society.

“Friends wishing to share in this worthy cause, and unable to attend, may leave their gifts or donations with Miss Mildred Hawkins at Hawkins’ Store or Mrs. Charles E. Thomson, Town Harbor Lane.”

Monday evening, September 8th, 1958, was when the International Sunshine Society was held in the Southold American Legion Hall. “28 members were present. Mrs. Florence Moffat, president presided. Many important business matters were discussed. The committee consisting of Mrs. Minnie Conway, Mrs. Florence Blaschack, Miss Mildred Hawkins and Miss Mary Conklin served delicious refreshments. Very beautiful flowers from the garden of Mrs. martin Shipuleski, decorated the tables.” {From The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman dated September 11, 1958.}

“We want to thank Mr. Herbert Hawkins and daughter Mildred for the use of their store …” {For a Southold Presbyterian Church Rummage Sale. From The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman dated August 06 {stet}, 1959.}

“At the annual meeting of the Christian Endeavor Society, the following officers were elected: President, Miss Helen Van Dyke; Vice President, Ethel Beebe; Recording Secretary, Miss Susie Dickerson; Corresponding Secretary, Miss Mary Huntting; Treasurer, Mildred Hawkins. {From a Fifty Years Ago column that appeared in The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman dated January 07 {stet}, 1965.}

“The Southold Sunshine Society met with Miss Mildred Hawkins.” {From a Days in Our Past 50 Years Ago column in The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman dated January 09 (stet), 1975.}
