Southern California Wildfires: A Human-Centered Response

When historic wildfires swept through Southern California, The Salvation Army responded with more than meals and supplies. They showed up with a focus on people—on their stories, struggles, and dignity.

At shelters in West Los Angeles, Captain James Fleming and his team are leading efforts to care for evacuees. From preparing meals to spending time with individuals, they ensure no one feels forgotten.

“We’re here to connect with people on a human level,” Fleming said. “These aren’t just names on a list—they’re people navigating one of the hardest moments of their lives.”

One evacuee, struggling to manage her health while living in a shelter, received personalized help to access her medication, thanks to the team’s attentive care. These efforts make a world of difference for individuals dealing with the strain of displacement.

Santa Monica volunteer Destiny Elias said it best: “If I can do something to help ease their burden, even a little, it’s worth it.”

Through acts of service, large and small, The Salvation Army is working to bring comfort, care, and connection to wildfire survivors.
