South Shore Development On The Rise
South Shore is one of 10 priority communities selected as a part of the initial phase of Mayor Lightfoot’s INVEST South/West commercial corridor improvement strategy.
Launched in October 2019, INVEST South/West's goal is to re-activate neighborhood cores that have historically served as focal points for pedestrian activity, shopping, services, transportation, public spaces and quality-of life amenities for local residents. In South Shore, the priority corridor is 79th Street from Stony Island on the west to the Metra tracks on the east.
We have seen developments already begin in surrounding neighborhoods, also selected for this INVEST South/West initiative. Community counselling and health centers are opening up, grocery stores and better pharmacies are made accessible to residents, as well as parks and streets are being redeveloped for more community centric living. Dedicated bicycle and bus lanes have made quite the difference in neighborhood safety. Newly updated Metra stations with wheelchair accessible ramps have aided in commuters' daily travel. South Shore is continuing to be a prime neighborhood to invest in.
The public investment into these particular areas of the Chicago south side, only incentives private investment and partnerships are formed.
