South Africa's Commitment to Wetland Conservation through 'Working For Wetlands' Initiative

Written by Nirvasha R.

South Africa does not take the decline of wetland environments lightly. As a country, we pride ourselves in the natural and dynamic landscape our beautiful country has to offer. After all, it is one of the reasons why so many tourists enjoy holidaying here. The government department that champions the protection, preservation and conservation of wetlands is the Department of Water Affairs (“DWS”). As mentioned earlier various developments that ultimately improve society and the world around us have the capacity to cause severe irreparable damage to sensitive environments such as these.

As such, DWS is tasked with ensuring that any enhancement to society is done so responsibly to ensure that wetlands take the least damage. One of the ways to ensure this is the “Working For Wetlands” Initiative set up by DWS and The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (“DFFE”). The conglomeration of paid partnerships and cooperative governance brings about ventures that are tasked with the safety, conscientious use and restoration of wetlands by ensuring support for small businesses and employment opportunities to name a few.

This initiative ensures the protection of wetlands through:

????????? Compliance and enforcement support;

????????? Advocacy, education, and,

????????? Extension support.

The restoration and rehabilitation have been achieved through:

????????? Erosion control – with “hard” and “soft” interventions;

????????? Bio-engineering;

????????? Invasive alien plant clearing;

????????? Revegetation;

????????? Floating wetlands; and,

????????? Constructed wetlands (emerging).

As we celebrate 24 years of dedicated efforts by the Department of Water Affairs and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, we recognise the invaluable impact of this initiative.

With over 1,500 wetlands restored, approximately R1.3 billion invested, and 37,000 jobs secured through the Extended Public Works Programme, we stride forward, cherishing our natural landscapes, fostering sustainable practices, and ensuring that the harmony between development and environmental preservation remains a beacon for generations to come.
