South African Table Grapes: A Resilient Industry in 2025

The South African table grape industry approaches the 2024/25 season with optimism and resilience. Export estimates for the season stand at 76.4 million cartons, slightly exceeding the previous year’s volumes. Favourable weather conditions, including abundant rainfall in 2024, ensure excellent water security and a high-quality harvest. Despite a slower season start due to cool spring weather, robust demand underscores the sector’s resilience.

Early Season Trends: Challenges and Recovery

By Week 50, inspection volumes reached 10.99 million cartons, reflecting a 12.6% decline compared to 2023. Lower yields in early-season varieties across the Northern Provinces and Orange River regions contributed to this drop. However, with mid-to-late season harvests underway in the Olifants, Berg, and Hex River regions, export volumes are increasing steadily.

Market Trends: Demand and Adaptation

South African table grapes entered relatively empty European and UK markets late in 2024, leading to strong early-season sales. To meet pre-Christmas demand, significant volumes were shipped via airfreight, demonstrating market interest despite increased logistics costs. Key varieties, including Crimson Seedless and Sable Seedless, are expected to drive momentum into 2025, even as price adjustments occur.

Varietal Focus: Meeting Consumer Preferences

Producers are prioritizing internationally favoured varietals, especially white seedless grapes like Sweet Globe?, Sugra35 (AUTUMN CRISP?), and ARRA15 (Arra Sweeties?). Red and black seedless varieties, including Ruby Rush? and Sable Seedless?, also maintain popularity, reflecting global consumer trends.

Innovations in Vineyard Establishment

The industry is addressing challenges like uneven vine growth through innovative planting techniques. By maturing vines in controlled environments before field planting, growers ensure stronger plants with earlier yields, enhancing productivity across the sector.

Logistics: Improvements and Strategic Diversification

Export logistics have improved significantly this season, with increased productivity at the Cape Town Container Terminal. The use of alternative ports, such as Gqeberha and Walvis Bay, has reduced delays and optimized export timelines. Specialized reefer vessels and containerized shipments ensure consistent supply to international markets.

Global Context: Competing in a Competitive Landscape

South Africa competes with other Southern Hemisphere exporters like Peru, Chile, and Namibia. While Peru faces water shortages and Chile projects modest growth, South Africa’s high-quality production secures its position in established markets and emerging regions.

Outlook for 2025: Strength Amid Challenges

With favourable mid-to-late season harvests, innovative practices, and strong market demand, South African table grapes are poised for continued growth. The industry’s adaptability and focus on quality ensure its prominence in global markets.
