I've had the privilege of exploring the enchanting landscapes of South Africa on seven occasions. Yet, until recently, I had somehow missed experiencing the Garden Route and Eastern Cape Game Reserves, two of the country's most renowned attractions. To rectify this oversight, I embarked on a nine-night solo self-driving journey through these regions, not only to demonstrate its simplicity but also to uncover the hidden gems that adorn this remarkable route.
My adventure began as I touched down at George Airport, the official gateway to the Garden Route. After collecting my trusty Nissan Magnite, I set out on a short 25-minute drive to my first destination, Wilderness. Nestled along the shoreline, Views Boutique Hotel lived up to its name, offering breathtaking vistas of endless sandy beaches and the serene Indian Ocean.

Over the course of three more nights, I continued my exploration of the Garden Route, with a standout experience at Tsala Treetop Lodge near Plettenberg Bay. This hidden gem, set amidst the treetops, provided a tranquil haven. My spacious suite boasted a private plunge pool, and the only sounds that broke the silence were the harmonious melodies of birds and the occasional chatter of curious monkeys. Tsala Treetop Lodge is a true retreat, perfect for a leisurely three-night stay, either as a base for regional exploration or for simply unwinding and escaping the bustle of everyday life.
The journey then led me to the crown jewel of any African adventure—the game reserves. I explored three distinct reserves, each conveniently marked with clear signage, making navigation a breeze. The standout reserves were Kariega Settler’s Drift and Shamwari Sindile.?
South Africa offers a plethora of game reserve options catering to various tastes and budgets, including many family-friendly choices. These destinations are particularly invaluable for those seeking a malaria-free safari experience.
If there's one passion that never wanes, it's my enthusiasm for all things Africa. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you'd like to discuss or explore this remarkable continent further.
