Sources of Talent: Building a Compelling Employee Referral Program

Sources of Talent: Building a Compelling Employee Referral Program

There’s no one-size-fits-all model of recruitment. Finding great talent to join your company can be extremely time consuming and challenging. One strategy that doesn’t always get enough attention is employee referrals. There are a number of research studies that have shown that employee referrals can increase quality of hire, reduce time-to-fill, improve retention rates, reduce cost-of-hire, lead to higher engagement, and increase diversity within organizations. Good people, know good people. So how do you build an employee referral program that actually achieves the goal??

Make it Structured

Here is where you have to define things such as the program’s objects, the criteria for eligibility, and the system for rewarding a successful referral. Remember to make sure it is enticing enough that people will want to participate. It should also be easy to understand, easy to find, and be thoroughly communicated to employees. Provide clear guidelines on how to submit referrals, and if you can provide progress updates to the referrer. This will keep people engaged and motivated with the program.

Promote it Internally

Proactively promote the program through internal communication platforms. Share success stories of employees who have made successful referrals and highlight the impact their recommendations have had on the organization. Recognize and reward employees for their referrals, whether through financial incentives, public acknowledgments, or other meaningful rewards.?

Equip your Employees to be Ambassadors

In order to maximize the success of an employee referral program, your employer brand needs to be right. That means that you have to have a company culture and values that are clearly articulated and one that is embodied by employees in order for them to be effective brand ambassadors for your company. Also provide employees with resources to be successful including job descriptions, employee testimonials, and details around long-term strategy and growth plans. Provide opportunities for training so employees can network and convey the value proposition.

Make the Process Easy

Technology can be your friend, but it’s the workflow that will matter most. Make sure the path to success is easy. Make sure to use any tool properly and if you can include ways to provide timely updates to the referrer…transparency is key. Most importantly, regardless of the outcome, demonstrate appreciation.?

Track and Measure Performance

Make sure to regularly monitor and measure the success of your employee referral program. This includes tracking the number of referrals, the conversion rate from referrals to hires, and the overall impact on the organization. Also analyze the quality of hires, their retention rates, and their performance within the company to assess the program's effectiveness. Use insights gained and feedback from participants to improve the process over time.

Employee Referral Programs can be extremely successful if done well. Create a program that can be taken seriously and incentivize your employees to participate in it. That means being transparent, and communicative throughout the process. So go out there and get some referrals.?
