At the Source - Prevent Auto Emissions
Our personal transportation choices have a huge impact on air quality. What we drive and how we drive impacts the environment. There are four major pollutants generated from driving vehicles: Carbon Monoxide (CO), Hydrocarbons (HC), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Particulate Matter (PM).
Government regulations and technologies have reduced average global warming and smog-forming emissions from vehicles.
Technologies like the catalytic converter, exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR-valve), and precise air-fuel mixtures controller, reduce emissions at the source. Also, you can burn less fuel with efficient fuel-vehicles, burn fuel cleaner adopting good habits like tires inflated properly or avoid idling, at least you can burn cleaner fuel such as ethanol, natural gas, bio-diesel or low-sulfur gasoline and diesel. When the question is Particulate Matter (PM), dust and fumes, burning fuel isn't the principal emission cause.
Abrasion of brake, road, and tire are relevant fonts of PM emissions. Against air pollution an innovative product developed from MANN + HUMMEL it's a Brake Dust Particle Filter.
A synthetic nonwoven filter media collect the particles created by the abrasion of the caliper, with no energy consumption required and replacement just together with the brake maintenance. Hardier versions made from both glass fibers and stainless steel fibers are in development. (Photo below: Adrian Wilson).
