Sounds like it Was Written by ChatGPT #WWGPT

“Was this text written by ChatGPT?” The question probably crosses your mind a few times a day now. Customer support emails from a service you use, or the cold sales pitches spamming your LinkedIn, are the usual suspects. But it's expanding to virtually everything you see online. The podcast you're tuning into, the article you're reading (perhaps even this one!), and even the movie you're watching. Books, once reserved as the reflection of wisdom and concentrated knowledge, now flood Amazon's shelves with texts that sound like the GPT technology wrote them. So, let’s coin a term for it: #WWGPT – Was Written by GPT.

Is this trend negative?

Historically, it was thought that AI would replace repetitive, straightforward tasks. Ask most folks which roles AI might assume, and many would visualize factory assembly lines managed by robots. However, AI quietly found its way to other domains, offering immense value: adeptly detecting and filtering spam emails, guiding you on maps, preventing credit card fraud, unlocking your phone with your face, and even correcting your grammar. It's behind that breathtaking photo you snapped with your smartphone. For the majority, the daily interactions with what's termed 'Narrow AI' (an AI focused on a singular task) went unnoticed.

Then came the news: a new AI so intelligent you could have a conversation with it. Moreover, it can write, sketch, and perform many tasks a creative individual might. General AI and Generative AI were introduced to us at once.

The adoption of ChatGPT skyrocketed, and for many, it became an essential daily tool. The reactions varied – while some were just surprised but not actively using it, others embraced it and rely on it daily, and a few found it unsettling. If it can generate code, what becomes of programmers? If it can write and design social media posts, what's the fate of content creators? Yet, as quickly as it rose, ChatGPT's use plateaued and began to decline. Was it a letdown? Overhyped? Or did it occasionally misguide us? Do you feel offended if you receive an email that sounds like a WWGPT? Can you trust the information which is a WWGPT?

Imagine Generative AI and GPT technology as an incredibly smart intern – one with a flawless memory. This intern can recall every piece of information ever taught, and while it can reason, its capacity is limited. The beauty of this technology, much like an intern, lies in its potential. It's a reservoir of knowledge waiting to be tapped. However, it lacks the experiential wisdom of seasoned professionals. Therefore, while it's tempting to dismiss something as WWGPT, it’s crucial to remember that, when used appropriately, even such outputs can be invaluable. They can assist in tasks, provide vital insights, or supply the information we seek. Yet, one shouldn't expect deep analytical suggestions on topics it hasn't been trained on, mirroring the limitations of the earlier mentioned narrow AIs.

Will AI continue to generate content on the internet? Undoubtedly. Perhaps the World Wide Web, or WWW, will soon have a sibling, which I named WWGPT. Even though WWGPT is about 50 years younger, distinguishing between the two might prove challenging. In many ways, they could be seen as twin sisters, one 50 years younger than the other, but still, increasingly, look the same.
