The Art of Active Listening: A Business Imperative
In business, active listening is the cornerstone of effective communication, functioning not only as a courtesy, but a strategic imperative. It's a powerful tool for building rapport, fostering trust, and driving successful outcomes. When we truly listen, we signal to others that their thoughts, concerns, and ideas matter – they hold weight and value. This cultivates an environment of collaboration and mutual respect because listening is not a passive endeavor; it's an active, dynamic process forming the foundation of successful negotiations, collaborations, and presentations. Our voice, acts as the conduit of our intent and it has the responsibility of delivering a sound message and engaging our audience. A well-crafted voice makes all the difference in business dealings and interactions as it resonates from the body of the speaker and connects directly to the ears of the listeners.

The Complexity of Perception: How We Hear and Receive Sound
The sound of the voice creates vibrations in the air and carries our words. Although it may not be tangible in the traditional since like something we can hold, it creates pressure and therefore, we can feel it. ?As humans, we hierarchize the voice, giving it precedence over any other sounds in our environment. Our ears are tuned to other humans, and when someone starts speaking, we focus and listen to see if we want to hear more. If we choose to listen, the voice engages the mind, heart, and soul opening the door for deeper understanding, empathy, and greater connection.
?
Resonance, tone, and pitch are three key vocal elements that allow us to vary the sound of our voices. When it comes to developing an easy-to-listen-to and magnetic voice, resonation is key. Vocal resonation is a how the sound of your voice is amplified, modified and enriched as it moves through cavities and structures in your body: the pharynx, mouth, nasal passage and sinus cavities. ?You adjust these as your speak to change the pitch, volume, or intonation of your voice, which allows you to create a diverse and expressive vocal range.
?
Resonance: The Key to Impactful Communication
At the heart of impactful communication lies resonance, which transcends vocal anatomy and physiology and goes straight to human connection. Resonance, both in the speaking voice and in listening, is the bridge that unites us. It is the shared frequencies that allow words to reverberate and connect – evoking emotions, shaping narratives, and eliciting responses. A well-modulated voice, that is warm, clear, and resonant ensures that our message is not only heard but understood and felt. It's not just about what we say, but how we say it. ?All the subtle nuances of pitch, breath, and intonation, add color and depth to our communication. It can either make us easy to listen to and help our messages land, or cause a distraction that completely derails the meaning of the message.
?
A resonant voice is the goal. Add warmth and clarity and you’ve created a great atmosphere for listening and effective communication. A resonant voice produces that tangible-like pressure that is captivating, drawing people in, while an attuned ear seeks to understand the subtle nuances and emotions behind the words.

How to Develop a Resonant Voice
1.???? Breathing:? Take a slow deep breath, inhaling through the nose and gently blowing air out through the mouth. Deep breathing helps balance your pitch, which creates a fuller, richer, more resonant sound.
2.???? Relaxation:? Relax your neck, throat, shoulders, and upper back. The best voice comes from a relaxed body.
3.???? Humming Exercise:? Hum with a low steady tone and make sure you can feel the vibration in your upper chest. This helps you locate and control the resonant spaces in your body whether it is in the chest, nasal cavity, or mouth).
4.???? Lip trills:? Gently blow air through your closed lips creating a “brrrr” sound. After a few seconds, transition into speech, maintaining the vibration in your lips. This helps engage your resonators (pharyngeal, oral, or nasal) and control your breathing.
5.???? Vowel Sustain:? Chose a vowel and sustain the sound for as long as you can on one deep breath. Focus on feeling the vibrations in your chest. Try different vowel sounds and pay attention to how each one resonates in your body. It will help you discover which vowels give your voice a fuller more resonant sound.
