The sound of opportunity ??

The Guildhall in London played host to the UK government’s International Investment Summit on Monday. As the inaugural event created to attract international businesses and investment into the UK, there were high expectations from the investors and businesses attending to hear a solid message from the Labour government. ?

Pied Piper

At the centre of the event was a speech from UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer. Kicking off with a short and amusing anecdote, he shared that he once pursued a fleeting ambition to be a professional flautist at the nearby Guildhall school of music.

This was well placed, given the reason for the summit…

Attracting investment into the UK to support Labour’s growth plans was reported as the purpose of the event, with Sir Keir serving as the Pied Piper with a hopeful outlook. Our co-founder and CEO, Anne M. Glover , was in attendance and heard the speech firsthand, which included four points to support the government’s growth plans. As follows:

  • Stability – A commitment to end the culture of policy “chop and change” and stick to long term plans to attract investors
  • Strategy – Building a more strategic architecture for growth, including the National Wealth Fund and Great British Energy . As well as announcing a modern Industrial Strategy .
  • Global Standing - Resetting global relations for Britain to be an open, outward-looking, confident, trading nation
  • Regulation - Improved regulatory environment for investment

Good messages, of which we’ll await the finer details. However, Sir Keir was clear and direct in his speech that “Private sector investment is the way we rebuild our country and pay our way in the world”.

The sound of opportunity

Setting the stage for the PM’s speech was a video from the government which highlighted British innovation, business and culture. You can watch the video here .

What this means for investment ?

We’ve been investing in innovative technology since 1997, through several changes of government. The focus of investment deals in AI, life sciences and infrastructure is positive, given the thriving UK startup and scaleup scene serving these areas.

Anne spoke with Bloomberg in anticipation of the summit, where she was asked about her hopes for the government’s plans. Her outlook? It’s too soon to tell, but the economy is stable for the first time in four years. A measured approach to any changes in tax policy will be necessary to attract investment.

The Prime Minister certainly played some of the right notes at the summit, we’ll see if the same tune continues in the budget announcement at the end of the month.
