Sound of Empowerment
If you've ever wondered how music can make you feel strong, confident, and proud of who you are, this article is for you. We will journey through time, from the 1960s to the present day, to explore how music has been an incredible force in empowering girls and women.
1960s: "You Don't Own Me"
Let's start our musical journey in the 1960s. Imagine a time when the world was a bit different, and girls were told what they could and couldn't do. But then came Lesley Gore with her song "You Don't Own Me." This powerful anthem was all about female independence. It clearly conveyed that girls could control their lives and make their own choices. The lyrics, like "I’m not just one of your many toys" and "Don’t put me on display," boldly declared that girls should never be objectified or controlled. This song still resonates today, especially in a world where our rights remain a major issue.
In 2015, SAYGRACE and G-Eazy covered this classic, giving it a fresh twist and showing that the message of independence is timeless. The music even switches from a minor to a major key, making you feel uplifted and strong. "You Don't Own Me" empowers by reminding us that we don't need to be owned by anyone.
1990s: "Rebel Girl"
Now, fast forward to the 1990s. This was the era of punk rock, and Bikini Kill brought us "Rebel Girl." Lead singer Kathleen Hanna was inspired by feminist artist Juliana Luecking and embraced female solidarity and desire. She wasn't afraid to talk about her admiration for older girls and her feelings. The song encouraged girls to be themselves and be proud of themselves.
Modern Times: "WAP"
In the modern era, artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B have continued to empower girls through music. Their song "WAP" is all about celebrating our confidence. In a world where female pleasure is still stigmatized, this song challenges societal norms and makes you feel strong for embracing your desires.

The Queen Herself: Beyoncé
Of course, we can't talk about empowerment without mentioning Queen Bey herself, Beyoncé. She has delivered countless anthems that make us feel like goddesses. "If I Were a Boy" is a powerful song that highlights the unfair double standards in relationships and calls out the behavior of some men. It reminds us that women deserve to be treated with respect and equality.
And then there's "Run the World (Girls)," a crowd-pleasing anthem that oozes strength and confidence. Beyoncé's message is clear: girls have the power to run the world, and this song is a reminder of that strength.
2021: "Feet Don't Fail Me Now"
Finally, let's talk about Joy Crooks and her 2021 hit, "Feet Don't Fail Me Now." This song is all about being bold and proud of who you are. It encourages you to speak out and challenge the norms, even when it's a little scary. The music video, with Joy Crooks wearing a white sari on a motorbike, is a powerful message that defies expectations and embraces individuality.
2023: Diane Warren's Anthem: "Applause" from "Tell It Like A Woman"
Diane Warren, a legendary songwriter known for penning some of the biggest hits in music history, has also contributed to the powerful soundtrack of female empowerment. Her song "Applause" from the album "Tell It Like A Woman" is a testament to the strength and resilience of girls. Warren's lyrics are like a battle cry, urging girls to stand tall, be unapologetic, and demand the applause they deserve for their achievements. Like other empowering anthems, "Applause" is a reminder that girls can and should take center stage, inspiring girls to dream big and reach for the stars.
Now, as we're gearing up for the Queendom Metaverse concert, we're looking for more extraordinary girls to join us. We want to create new anthems of empowerment, education, and self-acceptance. Do you have your empowering anthems? Please share them with us, and let's make your voice heard!
None of this would have been possible without the invaluable support of the Wayfarer Foundation and the unwavering belief of Ms. Laura Herrick (she/her/hers) Ms. Audrey Moy in my vision to harness the new wave of the internet and entertainment to empower and educate girls through the medium of music. I am filled with anticipation as I look forward to sharing even more with all of you.
