Soul Sunday: Learn From the Wise

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.” — Proverbs 1:5 ESV

Wisdom isn’t merely about accumulating knowledge; it’s about how knowledge is applied through experience. Often, those who are older are seen as wiser, not just because they know more, but because they’ve lived through more. They’ve seen the consequences of actions, understood life’s complexities, and learned from countless interactions.

Yet, in today’s culture, there’s a strong push to “live your own truth” and do whatever feels right individually. This mindset can lead us astray. Our personal experiences are limited, and by relying solely on them, we risk missing out on broader, deeper insights.

The Bible instructs us not to lean on our own understanding but to embrace wisdom that comes from a reverent fear of God (Proverbs 3:5-7). This fear isn’t about terror; it’s about respect, awe, and submission to God’s superior ways.

God’s wisdom is boundless and fully detailed in Scripture, offering us guidance for all life’s complexities. Beyond the Word, God provides wisdom through the counsel of seasoned believers—those who have not only studied the Word but have lived it out in faith through various trials and triumphs.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, guide me to seek wisdom not just in my own experiences but in the rich counsel of Your Word and Your people. Help me to value and seek out guidance from those who walk closely with You, that I may grow in wisdom and stature in Your eyes.

Action Steps

1. Seek Wisdom Daily: Start each day by reading a passage from Proverbs or another book of wisdom in the Bible.
2. Mentorship: Identify someone in your faith community whom you respect for their wisdom and ask them to mentor you.
3. Reflect on Advice: Before making decisions, consider the counsel of seasoned believers alongside your own understanding.
4. Share Insights: When you gain wisdom, don’t keep it to yourself. Share these insights in your community or small group.
5. Prayer for Insight: Regularly pray for God to open your eyes to the wisdom around you, especially in challenging situations.

Meditation/Mindfulness

Spend a few moments in quiet reflection each day, pondering the wisdom you’ve learned recently. How can you apply this wisdom more fully in your life? Let these insights sink deep into your heart.

• What recent piece of wisdom have I received, and how has it impacted my decisions?
• How can I more effectively seek out godly wisdom in my daily life?
• Reflect on a time when following wise counsel led to success or peace in your life.

Final Word

Wisdom is not just about knowing more; it’s about living better. By embracing the counsel of God and the godly, you prepare yourself to navigate life’s complexities with grace and insight.

This week, take practical steps to surround yourself with wisdom. Whether through books, conversations, or sermons, make a conscious effort to fill your life with godly insights. Remember, in the multitude of counselors, there is safety (Proverbs 11:14).
