Soul Reflector
Every person I meet is my teacher. Not just the ones I photograph. Sal was (and hopefully still is) a chef and I loved watching him work. I have a special affinity for chefs. Maybe because I love to cook. Maybe because they are like the captain of a ship. If I had to do it all over again I might choose cooking as my passion.
I’ve photographed a few chefs now and they all seem very poised in front of the camera. as if they really know who they are. Those are my favorite kinds of people to photograph because the photos are always striking.
I was given total access and free reign that day at Trou Normand. I was in my glory. I thought I had found my niche. Restaurant photography. Food, architecture, people. It’s all there. If I could I’d do this exclusively. But it’s not easy to get in the door. I was very lucky early on. I know the owner of the place.
But whether it’s a restaurant or a tech company the idea is the same - to capture the soul of the organization. Or souls. Sal was definitely one of the souls of Trou Normand. And what I do best is reflect them.
