We all know the feeling – that creeping exhaustion, the dwindling motivation, the once-bright flame of passion flickering precariously. Burnout. It's a thief of productivity, joy, and in a leader's case, the very energy your team needs to thrive.
As a former VP of People, I wore many hats. I oversaw the entire employee lifecycle, from attracting top talent through strategic recruiting to fostering a positive and productive company culture. It's incredibly rewarding to help people find their dream jobs and assist in building a work environment where they can thrive. But the constant pressure of wearing multiple hats, essentially managing three different departments, manage complex situations, and supporting a growing team has definitely taken its toll when I wasn't taking time to fuel myself up. I experienced burnout – the long hours, the emotional exhaustion, the lack of support even when I'd wave a white flag and finally ask, being held to a different standard than my counterparts and much more. That's why I'm so passionate about promoting the well-being of leaders through my social media platform, my coaching business, my podcast and this newsletter. It's clear – leaders need to take care of themselves first, so they can effectively lead and inspire their teams.
A song that resonated when I was experiencing burnout: You Haven't Seen the Last of Me - Cher
Here's the truth: leaders are especially vulnerable to burnout. The weight of responsibility, the constant pressure to perform, the emotional labor of guiding others, the lack of appreciation and support – it can all take a toll.
The good news? You're not alone. And more importantly, there's a path forward!
Lets dive into the complexities of leadership burnout and explore:
"True leadership is not about burning yourself out, but about igniting a fire in others."
What does Burn Out Feel Like?
Burnout isn't a singular feeling, it's a multi-headed beast that attacks you on a personal and professional level. The most noticeable symptom is likely the crushing exhaustion that seeps into every aspect of your life. Even the most basic tasks feel like climbing Mount Everest, zapping your motivation and leaving you emotionally drained. As a leader, this exhaustion can manifest as cynicism or a growing detachment from your work. You might see a dip in productivity and struggle to muster the enthusiasm that once ignited your team. Burnout can also wreak havoc on your physical health, disrupting sleep, triggering headaches, and leaving you more vulnerable to illness. Perhaps the most insidious aspect is the erosion of self-belief. Despite past successes, you might feel ineffective and question your accomplishments, leaving you feeling lost and unfulfilled.
Recognize the Red Flags: Spotting Burnout Before it Steals Your Flame
As a leader, navigating the demanding world of work can push you to your limits. But how do you know when healthy ambition has crossed the line into burnout? The key is recognizing the warning signs before they escalate. Here are some key red flags to watch out for:
Remember, these are just some of the signs of burnout.
The Perfect Storm: Understanding the Root Causes of Leader Burnout
Leaders are often seen as pillars of strength, but even the strongest can crumble under the weight of constant pressure. While burnout can affect anyone, leaders face some unique challenges that contribute to this emotional and physical depletion. Let's explore the root causes of leader burnout and identify strategies to address them:
How to Address It: Hire a coach to help you navigate this. Delegate tasks effectively, build a strong support network, and practice mindfulness techniques to manage stress.
How to Address It: Set clear boundaries, establish work-life balance, and disconnect from technology during designated off-hours. Prioritize sleep and schedule regular breaks for rejuvenation.
How to Address It: Invest in effective communication skills training, learn conflict resolution techniques, and build trust with your team to foster open communication. Connect with the LevelD Coaching team.
How to Address It: Seek out a mentor or leadership coach for guidance. Build a strong network of peers who understand the challenges you face. Advocate for your own well-being and communicate your needs to your superiors.
How to Address It: Set realistic expectations for yourself and your team. Celebrate small wins and focus on progress, not just perfection. Remember, even successful leaders face setbacks; resilience is key.

Building Your Firewall: Strategies for Prevention & Self-Care

Prioritize Sleep: A well-rested leader is a more effective leader. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Establish a regular sleep schedule and create a relaxing bedtime routine.
Embrace Mindfulness: Mindfulness practices like meditation and deep breathing can help you manage stress, improve focus, and cultivate inner peace. Dedicate even just a few minutes each day to quiet your mind and connect with yourself.
Prioritize Movement: Physical activity is a powerful stress reliever and mood booster. Find an exercise routine you enjoy, whether it's a brisk walk, a yoga class, or a team sport. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.
Set Boundaries & Disconnect: It's crucial to establish clear boundaries between your work life and personal life. Don't be afraid to disconnect from technology during off-hours. Schedule time for hobbies, spend time with loved ones, and pursue activities that bring you joy and relaxation.
Delegate & Empower Your Team: You don't have to do it all yourself! Delegate tasks effectively and empower your team members to take ownership of their roles. This will not only lighten your load but also foster their growth and development.
Seek Support & Connection: Leaders don't have to be islands. Build a strong network of colleagues, mentors, or a leadership coach. Talking to someone who understands the challenges you face can alleviate stress and provide valuable support.
Celebrate Wins (Big & Small): Take time to acknowledge your accomplishments and celebrate the successes of yourself and your team. Focusing on progress, not just perfection, can boost morale and keep you motivated.
Say No & Prioritize Yourself: Don't be afraid to say no to additional responsibilities if your plate is already full. Your well-being is essential, and a burnt-out leader is no good to anyone. Prioritize self-care and don't feel guilty about taking time for yourself.
Remember, self-care isn't a luxury, it's a leadership essential.
By incorporating these strategies into your routine, you can build resilience, prevent burnout, and lead your team with renewed energy and passion.
Remember, a leader who prioritizes their well-being is a leader who empowers their team to do the same.
