Soul Food is an integral part of black history. This cuisine reminds us of the enslaved Africans who were traded to America. Soul Food haven’t gained a prominent place in American cuisines and its time we re-introduce “Soul Food” to America, an important part of the Black American history. Soul food is simple and basic often made using inexpensive ingredients and raised foods [1] Hunted animals like deer, rabbits and squirrels and fish, turtles, crabs and shellfish are often used to prepare soul food. African influences could also be found in the soul food recipes. For example, rice which is a staple food of Africa and a primary ingredient of dishes like red beans and rice, and jambalaya.

Soul food is majorly associated with the history of “slavery”. The enslaved African Americans prepared meals from what was left, often eating the leftovers of their masters. They did not have healthy food choices and had to have food high in sugar, fat, carbohydrate and salt. Soul food has always been looked down on and is classified as “low class food” similar to how the “blacks” have been treated and looked down on in the initial period. Some very common soul foods are pecan pie, sweet potato pie, banana pudding, greens, macaroni and cheese, red beans and rice and cornmeal [2] These foods over the time have become a part of African American cuisine in America. Soul food has its roots in the southern part of America, places like Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia and is often associated with Southern food [3]

Soul food is born out of slavery and ties the black culture to its African roots. Over the time soul food has gained an identity and recognition in America. Soul food represents black culture, tradition, evokes a feeling of togetherness and home. Soul food represents the story of African American’s struggle and triumph.

Please forgive the Jews that you feel bad about being slaves. We were slaves too to black dark skinned men in Egypt; that's what we talk about Passover. Soul dishes are favorites of every one. Make food from plants and use the seeds to grow more food. There will be enough for everyone.
