Today I was very privileged to present an “Industry Seminar” on Dolby Technologies to Surrey University. What made this extra special was the fact that this was my old University. The students where however from two different courses, a mixture of students from both “Tonmeister” and a new course on “Film and Video Production Technology”. If you happen to research, you will find that there are more than 20 people that have or still work at Dolby that originally went to Surrey University!

What astounded me, was the incredible effort the University was undertaking to ensure that the students are kept safe in this unpresented time of a global pandemic. It also reminded me just how much pressure is being placed on these students, who are trying to cope not only with all the pressures of study, but compounded so much more by this current health crisis. I feel it is now more important than ever to continue to encourage these students, knowing the industry that they are studying so hard to build their career on is there to help and support them. The caliber of these students will be those leading our media companies in the future, so we need to reach out to them and support them in anyway we can. The examples we set now will be mirrored when they are at the helm and navigating the way through whatever storm they have to deal with in the future.

“Instruction is good for any student, but example is worth more” or “a true leader always leads by example”. Whichever way you look at this, it’s the “example” that the industry sets now that will become the picture of what’s possible in the future. When you lead by example, you make it easy for others to follow you!
