sorry not sorry

sorry not sorry

Sorry to be mean, but here's the thing.

I would've loved to send you some Easter chocolate, but have you?seen?the price of Cadbury's Mini Eggs this year?!

Seriously, the chocflation is real. Prices are up, egg sizes overall are down (darn that sneaky shrinkflation) and cocoa beans have reached nearly 8 thousand quid a tonne. Global warming will do that.

So, much as I like you, my gift to you this Easter (aside from that fairly rudimentary economics lesson) isn't going to be chocolate-related ??

Instead, I'm offering you?five fundamental truths of career shifting?that you need to hang on to long after you've polished off three Lindt bunnies and the weird Reese's Pieces eggs that no-one really likes ??

Ignore these truths and I guarantee you'll still be waiting for the Career Shift Bunny next Easter ??

(Be warned - I make no apology for the puns. I take my fun where I can find it. #sorrynotsorry)

???You don't need to know?egg-sactly?where you're going before you get started.?Egg-specting?to have it all perfectly figured out in your head before you do anything will keep you stuck for months (probably years).

??? Egg-sploration, not just thinking, is what will really shift the dial. That means fixing to have coffee with lots of different people, volunteering, taking a short course, bunging your hand up for a new project, trying a gentle spot of side-hustling, going along to events and new places. It does NOT mean Googling the same thing 27 times.

???"Find your Passion" is a perfect?egg-sample?of BS career advice. It sets the bar waaaay too high. Find something that you're curious about. Dig into something that's vaguely interesting. Talk to someone whose work you've often wondered about. Start there and you'll eventually find your thing.

??? Egg-spect?a career move to take time. People lose heart when it doesn't all happen in 3 months, but really shouldn't. The average career shift takes anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Enjoy the ride.

???Other people (friends, family, colleagues) can be?egg-sellently?helpful ("What an interesting idea - how can I help you explore that? who can I introduce you to? how can I encourage you or help you commit to taking action?") or?egg-stremely demotivating ("Blimey, a career move - what else are you really qualified to do? how will you earn any money? surely you'll have to start at the bottom?") Lean into the first gang, keep the second at arm's length.

So that's your lot today.

Short and sweet. Not unlike all those (slightly-smaller-than-usual) eggs I wish you joy munching on.?

Have a wonderful Easter break!

Stay curious,

Rachel

A very funny (punny) and enjoyable read, Rachel Schofield. But most of all your advice is spot on. I agree ??, especially the point about not following your passion but following your curiosity and not expecting a career change to happen overnight. It’s a journey of 1,000 steps.
