Though I couldn’t physically attend COP29 in Baku, I have closely followed the discussions, debates, and outcomes. As the world grapples with an accelerating climate crisis, the relevance of the Conference of Parties (COP) has never been more significant—or more questioned.
COP remains a vital forum for global collaboration on climate change. Yet, hosting COPs in oil-dependent economies like Dubai (COP28) and Azerbaijan (COP29) brings up critical questions about their capacity to lead meaningful climate action. Can a host whose economy thrives on fossil fuels effectively champion the transition to renewables? Or does this risk becoming a stage for maintaining the status quo?
The Butcher Leading a Meeting of Vegans
Imagine a butcher hosting a meeting for vegans, promoting plant-based diets while surrounded by meat racks. The scenario feels oddly similar to oil-rich nations leading COP summits. While these hosts often showcase renewable energy investments and green initiatives, their economic foundations remain deeply tied to fossil fuel revenues. The paradox is glaring: how can the drivers of climate challenges also serve as the leaders of climate solutions?
COP must address these contradictions head-on. Strong accountability measures and global scrutiny are essential to ensure that such summits are not just public relations exercises but meaningful platforms for progress.

The Outcomes of COP29
COP29 in Baku saw a mix of hope, tension, and unfinished business. While some progress was made, key agreements were left unresolved, leaving expectations high for COP30.

?Looking Ahead to COP30: New Expectations
With Brazil set to host COP30, optimism grows for a renewed focus on nature-based solutions and stronger leadership in combating climate change. Brazil's vast Amazon rainforest symbolizes both the urgency and opportunity of climate action.
Here’s what the world needs from COP30:
?COP30 must also address the growing influence of fossil fuel lobbyists. Their involvement cannot undermine the urgency of transitioning to a low-carbon economy. Greater representation for frontline communities, youth, and marginalized voices is essential to align COP outcomes with global equity.
?The Relevance of COP in 2024 and Beyond
Despite its challenges, COP remains a cornerstone of global climate negotiations. It’s where nations gather to hash out their differences, commit to collective goals, and (ideally) hold each other accountable. Yet, for COP to truly lead the way, it must evolve.
The urgency of our climate crisis demands nothing less. As we look toward COP30, the question isn’t whether we can afford bold action—it’s whether we can afford not to act.
?Conclusion: COP30—A Turning Point?
The next COP in Brazil offers a chance to steer global efforts toward a more sustainable and equitable future. With the Amazon at its heart, COP30 symbolizes the delicate balance between humanity and nature. To save our planet, we must hold our leaders accountable, sideline the influence of fossil fuel lobbies, and prioritize long-term survival over short-term profits.
The world is watching. Let’s ensure that COP30 isn’t just another conference but a genuine turning point for the Earth.
