The sorrows experienced by LGBTQ+ individuals in prison during Pride month of 2024
LGBT Voice Tanzania
A national LGBT organization working to advance equality, diversity, education, and justice for LGBT people in Tanzania
We stand firm, shoulder-to-shoulder, with the LGBTQ+ community in Tanzania, particularly during Pride Month. Our gaze is particularly focused on those who have been unjustly detained under the guise of law, simply for the act of expressing their true selves and identities. Our pledge to accomplish equality in Tanzania remains unwavering and unyielding, as we are acutely aware of the numerous LGBTQ+ individuals currently held within the confines of various correctional facilities spread across the country.
We stand in solidarity with Claudi Alex Mwinuka, Sulemani Mstafa Mtupa, Muharami Nayonga, and others who are currently incarcerated during Pride Month 2024, sharing in their pain and challenges.
The arrival of Pride Month in 2024 gives us a unique platform and opportunity to send a potent and resounding message to all corners of Tanzania's judiciary, the lawmakers, and law enforcement agencies. We stress, with utmost clarity and conviction, that being a part of the LGBTQ+ spectrum is not, and should never be considered, a criminal act.
Our advocacy and activism extend beyond mere words. We demand the urgent annulment of penal code provisions 153-157, archaic laws that have led to unjust confinement of our brothers and sisters. We call for the immediate liberation of all LGBTQ+ individuals wrongfully confined behind bars.

It is absolutely acceptable to be part of the LGBTQ+ community, and it never will be considered a criminal offense. Free the LGBTQ+ individuals who are currently incarcerated.
It is absolutely crucial that we continue to champion for the protection and safeguarding of rights and freedoms of all individuals, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It is only through such actions will we be able to cultivate a society that truly embraces diversity and inclusivity.
We advocate for a society where every individual is valued, where every voice is heard, and every identity is respected. We call for the immediate halt of discriminatory practices and the implementation of laws that foster equality, acceptance, and respect for all. We believe in a Tanzania where the unique identities within the LGBTQ+ community are not just tolerated, but celebrated, contributing to the richness and vibrancy of our society.
Let us stand united in ensuring that every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, is treated with the dignity they deserve, and is granted the same rights and privileges as any other member of our society. Only then can we truly say we are a society that values every individual.
