This won't be an easy newsletter to write, but none of these are. Matters of the mind and heart are nothing to approach in a cavalier manner. However, I still think we can have some fun along the way as we learn together.
Are we doing anime Jahmaal?...we're doing whatever it takes to broach difficult matters of mental health in a fun but also applicable way.
Let me first start off by saying I don't watch much television and even less Netflix. I'll admit, I can be late to the party and defiantly off-trend.
Weeks ago, I came across an amazing 8-part series called the Blood of Zeus. Not only did it renew my love for one of my favorite subjects (Greek Mythology), but it also gave me pause to consider what I was watching.
There are several stories at play, one I found the most fascinating was the tug of war between the King and Queen of Olympus. Hera the Queen of the gods, and goddess of childbirth and marriage found herself (yet again) playing second fiddle to her husband's harem. When she found out it was a mortal woman, she used both her influence, power, and cunning to ensure her demise. One would think she would be a bit more sanctimonious given her station at Olympus, but after Zeus' multiple affairs with other women (god & mortal alike) Hera reached her tipping point.
It would be easy to be fooled by her dazzling appearance, but when angered, she goes from 1 to 1000 in a matter of seconds. Her changes in mood, voice and even shapeshifting are quite chilling. Animators and producers did this character much justice as they not only put her abilities, but also her wounded headspace on display.
Having the abilities to shapeshift afforded her the luxury of seeing what others normally would not discern. However, it opened her mind and heart to the infidelity of her spouse. I often felt pity for her victims as they bore the brunt of her anger with her husband. As an agent of grace, I'm careful in giving any justification to harming another. Here, I see at work the universal principle of sowing and reaping.
"...Whatever a man sows that he will also reap..." (Galatians 6:7)
Zeus was a player, and certainly had a thing for the ladies. He even won Hera's heart through a bit of deceit. When I think of this tussle between this couple. I think of a principal, found in a book by Stephen Covey, "Begin with the End in Mind". If Zeus would have foreseen the fallout of his stepping out, I highly doubt he would have been so cavalier about choosing others over his bride.
I want to be careful not to spoil the series for those who have yet to see it, but the fallout was of epic proportions, and much was lost in the process. Let us consider how we ought to "Begin with the End in mind". We don't realize how our decisions may affect the headspace of those on the receiving end of our decisions, let alone how it may affect us in return.
Let's draw a boundary line when we begin to see good habits slowly deteriorate. It could be the difference between life or death.
