Sonja Biggs Educational Services: Embracing the Spirit of Life-Long Learning

In the dynamic landscape of specialized education, Sonja Biggs Educational Services, Inc. (SBES) stands out not only for its commitment to serving visually impaired students but also for its unwavering dedication to one of its core values: being Life-Long Learners. This principle is at the heart of SBES's approach to education and shapes every aspect of their work.

The Mission and Vision of SBES

SBES's mission is to provide quality educational services to schools, students, and their families. This mission is underpinned by a vision of creating quality education and accessibility for all students. SBES serves school districts by offering specialized services to children who are blind, have low vision, are deafblind, or are visually impaired with multiple disabilities.

Life-Long Learning: A Core Value in Action

Among SBES's seven core values - Integrity, Innovation, Life-Long Learners, Technology Efficiency, Communication, Teamwork, and Flexibility - the commitment to being Life-Long Learners stands out as a driving force behind their success and impact.

What Does Being a Life-Long Learner Mean at SBES?

  1. Continuous Growth: SBES embraces the idea that learning never stops. They encourage their staff, students, and partners to continuously seek new knowledge and skills. Professional development is encouraged among our employees. We have many employees who started out in one role and grew into another role.
  2. Not Being Complacent: The organization resists the temptation to rest on its laurels. Instead, they constantly seek ways to improve their services and methodologies. SBES developed a unique Service Log System that is robust and can provide a variety of different reports.
  3. Commitment to Knowledge: SBES invests in ongoing education and training for their team members, ensuring they stay at the forefront of best practices in visual impairment education. We believe in providing ongoing education and training through many different avenues from conferences to in-house training. We also have chat rooms where new teaching strategies and resources are shared among our employees.
  4. Fostering Curiosity: The spirit of inquiry is nurtured at all levels, from students to leadership, creating an environment where questions are encouraged and exploration is celebrated. At SBES we believe that it is important to be thinkers and doers and not mere reflectors of other people’s thoughts. We believe in developing students that are problem solvers who can work through challenging situations with calm confidence.
  5. Embracing Change: As life-long learners, SBES is always ready to adapt to new research findings, technologies, and educational approaches that can benefit their students. We developed the GAP Analysis to share with school districts where their Visually Impaired programs can improve with strategies that help them know the next steps to take. We also developed the VI Paraeducator Training Modules that can help districts save money by training their own paraeducators to be effective one-on-one assistants to students who have visual impairments and their unique needs.

The Impact of Life-Long Learning

The commitment to being life-long learners has far-reaching effects on SBES's work:

  1. Enhanced Student Outcomes: By continually learning and improving their methods, SBES ensures that their students receive the most up-to-date and effective educational support.
  2. Innovative Approaches: The culture of learning fosters innovation, leading to creative solutions for the unique challenges faced by visually impaired students such as the GAP Analysis and the VI Paraeducator Modules.
  3. Empowered Staff: SBES team members, inspired by the value of life-long learning, are more engaged, adaptable, and effective in their roles.
  4. Leading by Example: By embodying the spirit of continuous learning, SBES inspires their students to adopt a similar mindset, preparing them for a lifetime of growth and adaptation.
  5. Evolving Services: The organization's services continually evolve and improve, reflecting the latest insights in visual impairment education and related fields.

Conclusion: A Foundation for Excellence

The core value of being Life-Long Learners is more than just a principle at Sonja Biggs Educational Services; it's a way of life. This commitment to continuous growth and learning permeates every aspect of their work, from classroom instruction to organizational strategy.

By embracing this value, SBES not only ensures that they provide the best possible support for visually impaired students but also creates a culture of curiosity, growth, and adaptability. In doing so, they prepare their students not just for academic success but for a lifetime of learning and personal development.

In an ever-changing world, SBES's dedication to life-long learning stands as a light, guiding their students, staff, and partners towards a future of endless possibilities and continuous improvement. Contact [email protected] for more information or visit our website: https://www.sbesinc.com.

Hi Sonja! This is so great, and as a TVI/COMS myself I agree with all you said and absolutely love the image of calendar boxes (huge game changer). I’ve also started my own business to address the needs/deficits to support children, students, and individuals with blindness and low vision. If you need any novel teaching tools, want to gamify some intervention, or want to educate peers/families Inclusive Imagination is there for you! I’d love to connect sometime!
