In the Book of Matthew we read in chapter 27 that Jesus was turned over to Pilate.
Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked Him “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus replied “Yes, it is as you say” (Matthew 27:11). When Jesus was accused by the chief priests and the elders, He gave no answer (Matthew 27:12). Then Pilate asked “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” (Matthew 27:13). But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge, to the great amazement of the governor (Matthew 27:14). Now it was the governor’s custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd (Matthew 27:15). At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas (Matthew 27:16). So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Christ?” (Matthew 27:17). For Pilate knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him (Matthew 27:18). While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him a message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of Him” (Matthew 27:19). But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed (Matthew 27:20). “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas” they answered (Matthew 27:21). “What shall I do then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered “Crucify Him!” (Matthew 27:22). “Why” What crime has He committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder “Crucify Him!” (Matthew 27:23). When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, and an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood” he said. “It is your responsibility!”? (Matthew 27:24). All the people answered “Let His blood be on us and on our children!”? (Matthew 27:25). Then Pilate released Barabbas to the crowd. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified (Matthew 27:26).
Thought for today: Jesus died for our sins though the people at the time did not realise what He was doing for the world.
Thought for the future: Jesus knows the way to heaven and asks us to join Him for life. Where will you spend your eternity?
