?We read in the Book of Acts in chapter 12 that Peter was imprisoned by Herod, but he escaped with help from an Angel of the Lord.

?Herod had Peter arrested and placed in prison to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring Peter out for public trial after the Passover (Acts 12:4). So Peter was kept in prison, but the Church was earnestly praying for him (Acts 12:5). The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance (Acts 12:6). Suddenly an Angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists (Acts 12:7). Then the Angel said to Peter “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me” the Angel told him (Acts 12:8). Peter followed the Angel out of the prison and thought he was seeing a vision (Acts 12:9). They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the Angel left Peter (Acts 12:10). Then Peter realised the Lord had sent His Angel to rescue him from Herod and the Jews (Acts 12:11). Peter went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying (Acts 12:12). Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer the door (Acts 12:13). When she reconised Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed “Peter is at the door!” (Acts 12:14). “You’re out of your mind” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said “It must be his Angel” (Acts 12:15). But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw Peter, they were astonished (Acts 12:16). Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the brothers about this” he said, and then left for another place (Acts 12:17).

Thought for today: no-one is more secure than those in God’s hands.

Thought for the future: Jesus knows the way to heaven so follow Him for life. Where will you spend your eternity?
