All the Apostles reportedly died from horrible deaths, except for John, who died as an old man, though he also suffered greatly through persecution during his time preaching the Faith. There are no true recorded details known about their deaths, but the following is generally believed to be the most probable outcomes.

Matthew: a tax collector in Capernaum was reportedly stabbed to death in 65AD in Ethiopia while preaching the Faith.

Mark: reportedly died after being dragged by horses through the streets in Alexandria, Egypt.

Luke: believed to have been hanged in Greece because of his preaching to the ‘lost’.

John: the youngest Apostle (and younger brother of James), was the only one not martyred. He was taken prisoner in Ephesus in the year 95 and sent to trial in Rome. Sentenced to death he was miraculously saved from burning when boiled in oil though he felt the pain. He was then exiled to the prison island of Patmos where he wrote the Book of Revelation. He was later freed and returned to serve as Bishop of Edessa in modern Turkey. He died peacefully aged 88 in Ephesus in the year 100.

Peter: (the younger brother of Andrew), went to Rome to preach thus angering Nero who fed the Christians to the lions in the Coliseum. Peter was crucified in AD 69 upside down on a cross because he felt unworthy to die in the same way that Jesus died.

James: the greater (and older brother of John) was the first Apostle to be martyred. He preached the Faith in Spain where it was reported that Our Lady appeared to him on a pillar to encourage him. James was seized by Herod Agrippa and was beheaded in Jerusalem in the year 42.

James: the lesser, was the first Bishop of Jerusalem where he angered the Jews and was reportedly thrown down from the southeast pinnacle of the temple. After surviving the fall he was clubbed to death in the year 62.

Bartholomew: also known as Nathaniel, was introduced to Jesus by Philip. Bartholomew was a missionary to Asia Minor and preached in several countries including India. He was martyred for his preaching in Armenia and was reportedly skinned alive in the year 72. His bones are said to be kept in the Basilica of St Bartholomew in Rome.

Andrew: (older brother of Peter) was a disciple of John the Baptist and followed Christ. He preached the Faith in Asia Minor, Greece and Macedonia and was crucified on a cross in Achaia at Patras in the year 61. He continued to preach to his tormentors for two days until he died.

Thomas: preached the Faith in Persia and India, He was speared to death at Mylapore India in the year 74.

Jude: (brother of Simon) also known as Thaddeus, was martyred in Persia in the year 67, the same year that Simon was crucified at Edessa. Jude was reportedly killed by arrows after refusing to denounce his faith in Christ.

Matthias: the Apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot, he preached the Faith in Judea, Cappadocia and also in Asia Minor near the Caspian Sea. He was martyred (probably crucified) in the year 65.

Paul: previously known as Saul who persecuted the Christian Church before Jesus appeared before him on the road to Damascus where he became blind. Soon after Ananias restored his sight and Saul received the Holy Spirit. After that he was known as Paul and he endured a lengthy imprisonment during which time he wrote many epistles to the Churches he had formed throughout the Roman Empire. He was tortured then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in 67AD. Although his letters were written some 2,000 years ago, they are still very relevant to us today by giving us the foundational Doctrines of Christianity.

Thought for today: there’s only one way to heaven, so follow Jesus for life that’s ever lasting.

Thought for the future: it is by grace we are saved through faith in Jesus, and not by anything we have done, or can do. Where will you spend your eternity??
