A parable told by Jesus of a wasteful son who returns to his father and is gladly received, but his older brother is not happy to see him return. (Prodigal: wasteful, reckless extravagance). ???
There was a man had two sons (Luke 15:11). The younger one said to his father “Father, give me my share of the estate.” So the father divided his property between them (Luke 15:12). Soon after, the younger son set off with all he had to a distant country, and there he squandered all his wealth in wild living (Luke 15:13). After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in the country and he began to be in need (Luke 15:14). So he hired himself out to a citizen of that country who sent him to feed his pigs (Luke 15:15). He longed to fill his stomach with the pods the pigs were eating, but no-one gave him anything (Luke 15:16). He said “How many of my father’s hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!” (Luke 15:17). So he got up and went to his father. While still a long way off his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him (Luke 15:20). The son said “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son” (Luke 15:21). But the father said to his servants “Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger, and sandals on his feet” (Luke 15:22). “Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate” (Luke 15:23). “For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” So they began to celebrate (Luke 15:24). Meanwhile, the older son came near the house and heard music and dancing (Luke 15:25). He became angry and refused to go in. So the father went out and pleaded with him (Luke 15:28). But the older son said to his father “Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends” (Luke 15:29). “But when this son of yours who has squandered your property comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him” (Luke 15:30). The father said “My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours” (Luke 15:31). But we had to celebrate and be glad , because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found” (Luke 15:32).
Thought for today: repent today, for tomorrow may be too late.
Thought for the future: enjoy the abundance of God’s gifts, but never forget the Giver. Where will you spend your eternity?
